$2.3M stapler ouchie

Wow. I was working as a stone mason and herniated a disc. All I got from Workman's Comp was:

SCREWED!

What a lazy fucking piece of shit! If he wants to be "disabled" I'm sure that can be arranged...

Does that still count as civil...?

From the linked article...

"The next day, Onesti reported the injury to his superiors, who referred him for medical care. One questionable diagnosis, two surgeries and 18 months later, doctors opined he could no longer work as a transit cop.

Claiming New Jersey Transit did not offer him another job, Onesti said he was given no choice but to retire at age 29.

“Could I be a productive member of a police department?” asked Onesti. “Absolutely.”

Citing negligence in his use of the staple gun, the PFRS board approved Onesti for an “ordinary disability” pension that would pay him $27,228 a year, 40 percent of his former salary.

Instead, Onesti wanted an “accidental disability” retirement for a line-of-duty injury – a more lucrative benefit that now pays him $45,684 a year, or two-thirds of salary.

He had an accident while on the job that doctors later said prevented him from being a cop (after 2 surgeries). Given the alternatives, I'd get as much as I could too!

Don't hate the player, hate the game...

Quit making lite of this brave officers in the line of duty injury. They owe him. I'll bet they never once mentioned anything about the proper use of the stapler during the range briefing. Never once did they train him on the stapler. I wonder what the other officers did on the firing line when he squealed in pain "ouch". He probably could claim PTSD and get even more money. The bastards use a guy up and put out to pasture like some kinda used up stud boar.....fuckers. That's how I feel anyhow.

I agree, the blame belongs to the system not this guy. He saw an angle and played it, sure he's a piece of shit but so are the other 100 million people doing the same exact thing he's doing...

I read a report recently that said that if you make less that $51,000/yr in NY, you're better off not working and just collecting aide because that's what your aide package will amount to per year in NY (NJ is probably pretty similar) and by not working it frees up a ton of time to do whatever you want (buying rims, not seeing your 15 ill-legit kids...).

Total lazy dishonest sack of excrement. I know Texas oilfield hands who have lost A finger and or fingers and return to work in a day or two. Of course they didn't have organized labor lawyers but I doubt any of these guys would have wanted one. This kind of crap is why pension funds are collapsing all over the nation.

Since the game was 'forcing' him to retire, I cant say as I blame him. Hes out his work so he needs to live. Go big or go home.....

Horseshit. That welfare whore reported his 'injury' that got this unionized ball of crap rolling. He knew what the outcomes could be. I wouldn't be surprised if he exaggerated his 'pain' in order to get the surgeries.

Just shows scum and thieves are just as likely to wear a uniform as they are baggy pants and a hoody.

failing to report a injury is a fireable offence....

"Instead, Onesti mishandled the tool, piercing the base of his left ring finger with a staple. The wound was the size of a pinprick, according to his testimony. After applying a Band Aid, he successfully completed the qualifying test.

It is perhaps the most expensive staple in New Jersey history.

If he had not reported it and he got an infection or anything he would then have had no recourse. I used to run a business and if an employee got any injury he HAD to tell me just to satisfy workmans comp. Its not his fault they made a big issue out of it. Screwy, yes, but not really his fault.

Maybe the Slapper can comment on this. It is kind of in his neighborhood.
It probably does not give him a good feeling nor do I suggest he likes it.
I would bet that he has the inside skinny on it and can clear things up for whoever reads this thread. Regards, FM

did you not read...

Seriously? A staple through the finger is not a disabling injury. I don't care if they had to chop the fucker off, he could still work very easily. Maybe not as a beat cop in NJ, but he could do ANYTHING else short of a hand model. If he had any character at all he would have put up a fight to NOT be put on disability and just said "hey my bad with the stapler, I'll find another career". That's what a real man would have done, not a piece of shit like him.

Apparently the doctor said that the injury (or the results of the surgeries anyway) WERE disabling. Then, the department FORCED him into retirement without offering him another job.

Why the fuck would anyone throw away free money? A real man would take the money AND find another career... He's a douche nozzle because he is at the range shooting when the rest of us slobs have to be at work, not because he's drawing retirement benefits (as has been noted, he could hold any number of productive jobs). Once he was forced into retirement, he would be foolish not to get what he could. Anyone who says they would not have done the same thing is either a liar or incredibly stupid.

That statement follows right along the lines of califorinia EBT.program

Any real man would NOT take the money and run. Some men have morals and ethitcs but it surely doesnt mean they are stupid.

It's not "free" money. It's taxpayer money. There is no such thing as free money when it comes to the Government handing it out. I would try my hardest to not be classified as "disabled"in this situation because 1) it's not a disabling injury and I know I could find other work and make more money than they can gibe me and 2) I'm not a parasite that feeds off the system. I have what's called integrity and class. Apparently you don't along with about %40 of America.
