I just got my first custom build and now I need something to keep it in. Unfortunately i have run out of money so I am asking you guys for a recommendation on a case that want break the bank but keep it secure. What are you guys storing your long range toys in?

Whats your price range? You can find them for $30 if you just want to put your rifle in it and not ship it or take it off roading.

Screw price range. What sort of a case do you want to protect your rifle from what threats?

Bumps and jostles as you take it out to the local range?

- or -

To secure it in and fly to the other side of the world with ten different kinds of ex-cons & orangutans tossing your baggage from an ox cart to airplane & back without a blemish or loss of zero?

Mission drives the gear.

Me:
STORING: Gun Safe.
TRANSPORTING: PELICAN 1770. (the STINGER missile case is too big)

+1 for the Pelican if you're wanting a hard case. For a soft case, there a lots of options available like Tac Ops, Eberlestock, BlackHawk, 5.11 Tactical, etc.

Have to say pelican

Pelican and Storm both have their redeeming features.

As for the 1770 - I just traded one locally today. It DOES have 54" interior so if you have a 32 inch barrel like my 300 RUM it will fit BUT -

This case with a 17# rifle WITHOUT bipod will weigh in at 53 pounds. So you will have this HUGE case when you fly with only one gun in it. It's enormous and much of the space is wasted. Unless you want to pay overweight fees. It's over length on some airlines too. I have on occasions had to take the bolt out of the gun to make weight. Southwest for example just increased the overweight charges to $75 per item up to 100#. That was the death knell for my 1770.

If you need to fly with a long rifle, check out the new SKB 50 cal case. Mine should be here next week. It has a claimed weight of 29# so at least I should be able to haul some extra gear (bipod, mags, cleaning rod) and be under 50#. Also, it has side handles, the 1770 has only end handles. I can't tell you how unweildy the 1770 is. My wife HATED it when we flew with that case.

When I'm just going to the range, I use a $6 padded gun sleeve from CTD. Far easier for short trips than lugging out the Pelicans.

Have used Pelican cases for years and they have never let me down. I've stopped using them for camera gear just because of the weight of the cases but the protection is great…especially on an aircraft.

May want to give Plano hard cases a look. They have some hard cases that are similar to the Pelican style, for half the price. I just purchased one for my recently issued DPMS LR-308. Has pluck foam and seems pretty rugged. Won't break the wallet. Walmart had mine for $69. Yes, it's not a Pelican....but it certainly works for my application in the back of my patrol truck.

Was what I was going to mention for casing and not breaking the bank. My team mate has used one for his 3 gun set up and precision rifle has flown around the country and never had a problem. I have one as well but haven't flown with it yet.

Here's a review he wrote http://www.teamblaster.net/reviews/PlanoGunCases.pdf

That said I wouldn't do any long term storage in a case. Too much chance of trapping moisture and rust. Get a cheap gun cabinet and bolt it to your closet wall.

OK, that PLANO case sure does look nice! If its as solidly built as the pistol case I have of there's than THAT is the winner by far!
