I just got a new Remington 700, 5R Milspec, 308,SS,20" threaded Barrel

I think I want the JPTRE-5.58B.875. My barrel measures .857 at the end of the barrel. Is this the right size break? Can a gun smith turn down the taper to .857. Can he turn down the break and tune it without removing my barrel.

Would it be easier for the smith to match the SS finish (Not Perfect) or go with Matte Black.

Most smiths can install a brake without removing the barrel.

As far as turning down the brake taper to match your barrel , yes it can be done.

I would personally choose a different brake that's a little smaller and can be turned to match the profile of the barrel. Something like the "thruster" brake from Badger can be turned down to the same dimension as your barrel so their could be a seamless fit like the brake is part if the barrel.
For a 308 their doesn't need to be a whole lot of brake to reduce the recoil.

Thank you JJones. I forgot to add it's a 20" Threaded Barrel. I started out wanting a Badger Thruster. A smith told me he needed to turn it down on the rifle and refinish the whole barrel.

I would rather go with a black finish than mess with my barrel and its finish.
