I'm working on picking up a savage in .338 lapua any info good or bad on this rifle or cartridge? want to do some long range shooting and maybe use it for an elk hunt. pros and cons of it? what kind of groups is this cartridge/gun capable of? thanks for your input..

The pros are it makes hits at crazy distances. I have seen a guy hit man sized target at 2500 yards with the 110ba on three strair shots. The cons are it cost a shit load to shoot it buy ammo for it and reload for it. Other thank that its a great round.

I have a the FCP-HS and love it. It has exceeded my expectations as an out of the box rifle. I don't find it unreasonable to load for, once you get the brass purchased. I just figured a box of Lapua brass into the price of the rifle.

haven't checked yet but is laupa brass the the only brass out there or do others make brass?

Try bertram brass. Made in australia, so far all reports are all positive, i just grabbed 100 cases at much cheaper than lapua.

Lapua, Hornady, Nosler & Norma brass is all available for the .338. Word on the web is that the Savage doesn't do well with the Hornady brass. Several reports of cases getting stuck and needing to be knocked out with a cleaning rod. No one seems to have problems withe the Lapua and Norma stuff
I've been doing my initial research on a .338 Savage for myself for the upcoming season and may pick up a 110BA at some point.

Not sure if someone can back me up on this but last I heard from my nephews, uncles, neighbors, cousin's, son's neighbor is that they like to load long. So, they should like Berger 300 grn's, but that is just what I heard.

They do like a long load, but mine shoots sub-MOA with a magsafe load. The research I did when working up loads for mine said to make them as long as will possibly fit in the mag, and shoot it. That theory has worked pretty well for me, I have loaded some with a short jump to the lands, and they shot a little better but not worth the hassle unless I was competing, or my life was on the line. Just my $.02

Lots of issues with these rifles. Search around a bit and you will find what I'm talking about. I, personally, would never buy a Savage in 338lm. You get what you pay for when purchasing the cheapest rifle on the block. Sometimes great, sometimes not so great.
