I need to get a better stock for my .308 Remington 700 AAC SD. This gun will be used for all round use - I really want to get into some long range shooting (1000 yd.) with this rifle, but also maintain it's use as a hunting gun.

The gun as it is now:
Remington 700 AAC SD .308 w/ stock Hogue
Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP
Warne 20 MOA base
IOR Valdada Heavy Duty Tactical Rings
Harris 6-9" bipod

I am thinking that I want a stock that does not need to be bedded (i.e. although I understand that even with a great stock slight additional accuracy improvements can be made if it is bedded). Also, since the stock has to be inlet for a DBM. I would rather get a DBM right away so that if I want to upgrade to the DBM later I will not have to replace the stock. I have been considering McMillan and Manners. Do not know which style. So a couple of questions:
- Is a DBM that nice of a addition. It adds $$$.
- If I get a DBM & go w/ Manners is their MCS-DBM Mini Chassis supperior to just getting the stock inlet for Badger M-5 DBM
- Is an adjustable recoil pad desirable for length of pull adjustment?
- Is an adjustable check desirable - it adds weight (& bulk?), but would eliminate the need for a removable check pad

I am not sure as to what style (M40, hooked or not, etc.) or what options should be considered. Please help me navigate thru these choices. Also, I am a good enough shooter (yet) to benefit from the a high end stock/DBM, but do want to get into long range shooting and want to make sure that I have the appropriate equipment. Also, should I also consider a B&C stock or picking up a 700P stock to save some $$$? I do not have money to burn, but would rather cry once and get it over with.

I love my AAC-SD in a B&C A3 (light tactical).

That being said, if you want a dbm its better to have it inleted (or do it yourself if you can). I tried the new PTG "drop in bdl" dbm and unfortunately it didn't drop in for me. Excellent quality part, just didn't fit my stock (I blame the stock more so than PTG). If I could do it over I'd hold off for a manners with an M5 inlet and get a PTG dbm for it. Or even look for a used McMillan.
You deffinately won't go wrong with a B&C Stock. For the money it's excellent! :D

i went with a B&C A5 and then later sent it to Jeff at CDI Precision to get a DBM and inletting (great price/product). My next stock will be a AI AX ($$$) but considering it comes with a DBM builtin, not that much more than buying them separately. Manners and McMillian make great stocks but there are other options and paths too.

oh and you will go thru rounds faster with a DBM

I went with the #2956 Hook and love it. Bedded it myself with Devcon. Shoots the 168 vlds better than anything. But on my AAC SD , the throat is so long I just couldn't justify putting a DBM on it. Hell, my hand loads would be wayyy to long. But for factory stuff I can see the appeal.

How long are your loads vs. the maximum overall cartridge length that fits in the DBM? Do your max length loads fit in the existing internal magazine? Even w/ a DBM, single shots can still be loaded though the top, correct? Or is this too inconvenient.
