Looking at safes and was originally thinking of something larger but came across this on sale for $600. Does anyone have this particular model? Thoughts?

I was gonna say with safes you get what you pay for but Costco typically does a good job of not carrying junk.

FYI, the mobile link doesn't function from a computer.

My son bought the largest one that they sell. It seems to be a decent home safe or lockable forearms container as none of the home units are truly a safe. He did have an issue after 6 months or so with the cheap electronic lock that is factory installed as it would not allow him access a lot of the time and then ultimately about 1 out of 25 tries (it wasn't just a keypad issue). He called the manufacturer and tried to obtain a mechanical S&G lock but none was available for it from them. The manufacturer initially was going to replace the entire lock assembly (not just the keypad) with a like unit but my son chose to pay $100 for the upgraded lock assembly that the manufacturer offers. He installed the entire locking unit himself and so far so good.

I have one and had the same issue with the keypad, the manf sent out a new one and it has been fine ever since. Next safe will be a dial though....

Thanks for the feedback. The safe gets great reviews from what I have been able to find but the electric combination kind of scares me. I may have to try it at that price though.

The Costco no hassle return policy is tough to beat. From the above, it sounds like Bighorn took care of issues...but even lacking that support, Costco does a good job on backing the products they sell.

^^^ yup, $55, a bargain if you go there enough and know what to buy.

Yes, the basic membership is about $55. In my opinion, getting the Costco AMEX is the way to go. You get a membership with it and cash back on purchases at costco, including gas. Look into it and decide for yourself.

I have one and so does my dad. I'm sure there are better safes out there but for the price, I think this one is hard to beat.

Stay away from BIGHORN

Having owned one, I cannot recommend BIGORN safes. The safe appeared reasonably well made and fairly sturdy upon delivery. Unfortunately, the locking mechanism failed two weeks before the 1-year warranty expired, and I would say that during my 11.5 months of use, I probably openned the safe less than 25 times.

When I contacted BIGHORN to describe the situation - basically unable to open the safe due to a stripped out lock - the technical support person knew exactly what I was talking about, and over-nighted a repair kit to me, then contacted a local locksmith to open the safe and repair the lock. It took the locksmith almost five hours to open the safe, not because the safe was some kind of impenetrable marvel, but simply because the cheaply made lock and internal mechanism was so out of whack. Once opened, the locksmith was able to show me the cheap pressed steel used for the lock mechanism, and just how soft and easily stripped it is. After I saw this, I immediately contacted CostCo for a complete refund, and to the credit of CostCo, was taken care of literally within 5 minutes.

Do yourself a favor. Save up a little longer and buy an American Security safe. Much more expensive, and worth every penny.

i have two of these now, (largest that would fit downstairs).

they are a big metal fire box. they are ok from a quality standpoint for the price, a comparable one is 800-900. in that price range/quality range costco is the way to go.

their cs is pretty good as well.

I have a Liberty fatboy safe and it's been great! You can get real good deals on these safes if you shop around. I got the dial as well because I didn't trust the electronic lock.

can't afford a nice safe...bought cannons and think of them as a more secure cabinet. one day I'll be able to afford a nice safe. The cannons work for me right now. Bighorn would work I'm sure.

best safe

remember your safe is only as good as the warranty/CS. I had a Fort Knox keypad lock fail which took
over 6 hours to get in by the locksmith all covered by their warranty. don't believe it when they tell you
the keypads don't fail, I'm living proof of that. my old Fort Knox S&G combo is still chugging and I am
considering changing out the keypad to a combo as I can't get over the fail on the electronic lock. Just
don't want to spend the money on the retrofit right now. Check their rep. before you buy is all I can say.
I will never buy anything but Fort Knox because of their CS/warranty.

As others have said, get the dial and really consider what you are going to be putting in there and how much protection you think you need.
