Buy or Build 308

I would buy but a one year wait is a no go. Building my 308 would be good also but it seams that any good billet upper & lower are not to be found either. How good are the Armalite Super SASS rifles. My cost is $2364. or is an LMT-MWS or GAP10 that much better. With a Geissele trigger and a new barrel would the Armalite be just as good?
Kevin

The Armalite Super SASS rifles are absolutely top notch and that's a great price (most retail for ~$2500 and change if not slightly more these days). Sub-MOA capable out of the box with proper ammo and a shooter that can operate a large-frame semi-auto properly, they are utterly reliable, come from a company that stands behind their work, etc., etc.

Now...as to the GAP-10 being "that much better..." the short answer is "YES, IT IS!!!" With the Armalite, even though you are more or less getting their "top of the line" rifle, is still a "production" rifle by all measures. The trigger leaves a fair bit to be desired and, to paraphrase Henry Ford...you can get them in any configuration you want, as long as its the basic configuration they come from the factory in. ;) Everything else is on you in the aftermarket to "upgrade" or otherwise reconfigure to your liking. Not so with the GAP-10 which is a true "custom" rifle built to your specs in terms of how you want it setup and at least some of the components that will make up the rifle. Yes...the wait is long and nail-biting at times, but in my opinion...well worth it to get EXACTLY what you want/need without having to cobble something together from another complete factory rifle.

In terms of building...quality receiver sets aren't all that tough to source and waits really aren't all that bad (couple months max depending on the particular receiver sets you are talking about...some more...some considerably less), but it all comes down to what you want/need and your particular expectations as to what is "good enough" for you.

Actually, you can have your cake and eat it too on this one. A number of people have had to sell their GAP10s recently due to a variety of factors. If you're patient and keep a keen eye on the Firearms for Sale section, I bet you can find a new one around $3500 or a used one around $3200 or so, depending on the upgrades, thus avoiding the 1 year wait time. My GAP10 has honestly become my go-to gun every time I get to the range. It shoots much better than the GAP guarantee, both suppressed and unsuppressed. I can't recommend the platform any more highly.

If you don't want to wait for a GAP you can pick up a brand new POF P308 in 16.5" or 20" for $2100-$2200. Love my POF, extremely accurate out of the box and a company that stands behind their product.

ArmaLite Black 308 Win. w/20" Stainless Match Barrel/Nationa $1,550.00 SHIPS FREE

Take the other +$1500 and put it toward a NightForce.

A) Have a blast shooting the barrel out
B) Modify stock, trigger etc down the road
C) Never saw an ARMALITE AR-10A4 20" Chrome-Lined
fail to shoot five (5) shot groups sub 0.75" @ 100yd with fodder that it liked.
And that is from 1999 to today. Seen a bunch of people that can't shoot.

10Ts are sweet.

Best to you.

EDIT: ARMALITE has 20rd mags five (5) for $150. S&H has been @ $12

The only thing I find odd is that they use 6061 billet for the receivers - not that I find that problematic, just that it seems 7000 series is more common in the market.

I have one, it is a steal in the AR 308 space. The handful of first hand users have noted that is sub-MOA with good ammo, mine is as well.

I have just ordered a Mega Maten Keymod upper & lower. Found one in stock at a normal price. Now comes the fun of ordering the right parts. Anybody know where I can find a Bartlein 22" in 308. I am still going to order a Armalite Super SASS on monday. My wholesaler still has three in stock.

Where'd you find one in stock?

A man after my own heart!! Why choose between buy or build when you can buy AND build what you really want!!! Amen, brother! ;)

Not sure on Bartlein .308 AR tubes...especially a longer, 22" one. You are most likely looking at a custom job if that's the direction you want to go which will also incur at least somewhat of a wait (albeit probably shorter than the wait on a Krieger which is approaching ~1yr last I spoke with someone there). You might give Paul Craddock at Craddock Precision a shout and see what he can offer you. He works with Bartlein tubes sometimes (depending on his stock) and I know he does the highest quality of work based on the barrels he has done for me and others. He also does a lot of work for places like D9 which uses Bartlein .30 tubes worked by Paul. His website isn't the best, but his workmanship and service are second to none: Wix.com craddockprecision created by pa4444 based on pro-bistro

Good luck!

Nothing against buying one, but I found build was, at least for me, just as good and considerably cheaper. Since the .308 was my first AR variant, I had Rainier put together the upper and test fire it for an extra $100. Now I can do that myself...probably could have then. Still saved a lot. I did the rest of the parts acquisition, got exactly what I wanted, and found the lower wasn't hard to put together at all. Heck, Mega does most of the pain-in-the-butt assembly for you with the ambi MATEN. I didn't have to learn the hard way with springs flying all over the place. One downside, which I think is small, is you don't get a full-on warranty like GAP or Larue would offer. But I haven't had and don't expect to have problems with a Mega-quality upper/lower or with a JP BCG/Silent Capture spring. Quality components will rarely fail you. The other is paying for tools you might use once or twice.

I just got done modifying my flat top basic AR-10A4.... drop in 2 piece quad rail $150, Atlas bipod w/ larue mount $270, vortex 6.5-20x50 scope with 20moa larue mount .. $580 scope/240 mount. I'd rather modify it myself than pay huge money for the extras. And you can modify it at your own pace. :)

I've done both although not on an AR platform... M-14. I had the choice of bbls., bolts, op rods, you name it and got Exactly what I wanted including how I reamed the chamber for H.S. I personally think if you build instead of convert you are money ahead in the long run and more satisfied with the final product. I do tell my customers the same thing, buy the receiver from me and then " go out and multiply." :)

If you can afford to throw down $3,200 on the spot that is by far the best way.

If your like me and that's a bit much to drop in one sitting. Builds can be great shooters if done right. I'm looking at around $2,900 with glass when done. It's no GAP10 but from the groupings I've seen other put with very similar to exact builds as mine I'm looking at a .5 MOA gun. Aka a 2 MOA gun in my hands :D
