New to the forum but have read some great info thus far. Have a question pertaining to the weaver tactical 4x20-50. Just bought a new model 700 .308 and want to start shooting out to 700-1000 yds. Realistically this sysytem will be used for hunting deer at ranges 500-700. I'm a capable shooter but new to mils and shooting at that kind of distance. Also, have a model 7 7mm08. How well would that caliber hold up at a distance like that? 129 gr. rem. hp ammo for it. Thanks. Any input is appreciated.

I would think that would do just fine at the distances you're talking. However, I'm neither expert nor hunter, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in soon! Great shooting website-best I've found for quick and accurate help. Good Luck

^^^^^ See someone beat me to it!

I would think for pure target shooting - the .308 would be the better bet. Cheaper to shoot, lots of load development, lots of corporate knowledge with that particular system.

However, I think for hunting at those longer ranges - the 7mm-08 would seem on paper to be a better caliber. I'll probably get shit on for this by the hive, but I think the .308 is starting to run out of steam out past 500 for big game. Certainly out at the outer limit of 700, its getting anemic. It would certainly put shot placement at a higher premium with the .308. Having said that, the .308 taken probably LOTS and LOTS of game at 500+. But I don't think it would be the "ideal" round for that application.

Thanks guys. I see i forgot to put in my actual question about the weaver. Sorry about that. Do ya'll think the weaver scope i mentioned is a reasonable solution for what i want to do? As far as glass goes i can't justify spending a couple grand on high end makes...and if anyone can offer up a cheaper scope that can give me the same type of results i'm after that would be awesome.

The deer where i'm at don't grow over 200 lbs. rarely do we see one this way with that kind of weight and i'm no trophy hunter either(can't eat the horns), and i've had my doubts about the .308 being able to make a clean kill at that kind of range myself but have heard people swear up and down it will and people that say no way so i'm still on the fence. All in all my farthest shot i can attempt on our club is right around 850. The rest of the powerline, where this type setup comes into play, is between 450-700 tops. Hilltop to hilltop shots.

I hit a frozen gallon milk jug at 500yds with a 243. Judging by what the jug looked like that 243 would take anything in the continental United States out to 500.....I'll see if I can find the pic.....

with the right bullets 308 can even take elk but the 7mm08 does have better ballistics and as far as scopes its really what you need do get muscled into getting an expensive scope you dont need if the weaver meets your expectations and budget then go for it i got a millet trs because it had the features i needed and didnt break my wallet .... if i had more of a budget id get a vortex pst or so didnt feel like spending a over a grand for a hunting scope

Dead Milk

You cant tell from the pic but about 50% of the center of the ice inside the jug had been evacuated. The bullet hit allmost dead center and bullet still passed through a solid gallon of ice. I found the little red plastic tip (Hornady Vmax) but not jacket or bullet fragments.

I don't think Lowlight charges more for .'s and ,'s Just saying..... :)

Damn phone won't let me pull up the pic of it!! Ughhh. I can't see spending that kind of money on a scope i'm taking in the woods either, and the weaver is at the top of the budget now. Read a bunch of reviews on a bunch of different scopes and the nearest place to go look at good scopes is an hr and a half from here so i'm gona pick out three i like/think would do what i want and go get one of em! Really appreciate the input. Hopefully this time next year i'll drop one wayy out there.

So you are looking in the $800 range? You can find used Mark IV's for close to that sometimes. I hate garbage scopes that dont work. If you have one the gun wont be worth a crap.....and you'll be mad. Dont skimp on glass.

Another quick question someone may can answer for me, been sifting through mil dot info...what is the simplest method for ranging your target? Seen a bunch of math thrown around to get the answer.
