There is a rifle match at Camp Robinson Arkansas every month. 600yds one day and 1000 the next. I'm planning on a 6.5 creedmoor build to be able to shoot both with one rifle. My question is this. Since I will be shooting off the ground will a heavy bull barrel be the best option?. Also when I order my stock do I need to tell them what contour barrel will be going in it. I notice the Bartlien barrels does not have a straight bull barrel, but most other barrel makers do? I wanted to go with bartlien and still may, but I need to figure out what contour I need. Any info would be great.

I have a 6.5CM bartlein 24" in their MTU profile which is very accurate. very heavy, too, so makes positions other than prone a bit of a chore.

I prefer Rem varmint profile or medium Palma profile for general use.

Definitely double check with the stock maker if it'll fit - doesn't hurt to ask up front.

As mentioned in the post above I would look at either the light or medium Palma contours. I have a 6.5 CM with a 26" Brux light Palma contour built by Scorehigh in ABQ. With scope mounted is slightly over 13 lbs.

Medium Palma is all the contour you need, anything bigger just soaks recoil more but adds nothing to accuracy.

Was thinking about bartlein light varmints for both my rifles. .875 at the muzzle on a 26" blank. Seems like the medium between sendero/remington varmint and a MTU or m24/m40.

That said my 5R in my mcm A5 with DBM and a 10 round AICS mag with my SN-3 is 13.9lbs unloaded without a bipod.

What do you mean by a straight bull barrel? A straight blank/no taper at all? Like a 1.250" straight from breech to muzzle? If so no big deal. Just tell us that when you order it.

My F-Class open gun is in .284win. The barrel is a 1.250" straight x 32" finish.

I picked up a Krieger from Bruno's shooter supply in a Bruno's modified lv contour. Originally wanted an lv contour for a tikka, needs to be 1.200"@breech, looking for less weight and instock. A Remington varmint would have been perfect but they are 1.250 and action is 1.2". The Bruno's was 1.205 for 3" then straight taper to .830@29"

For typical prone shooting I enjoy my Bartlelin m24/m40. 26" bbl and chambered in 6.5CM. It is heavy, but not unmanageable should you need to shoot positional. I wouldn't go MTU (or heavier than M24/M40) unless you plan to never pick the gun up to shoot it...

That being said....I have a Bartlein medium palma in the safe that I plan to use on the next build. This will provide the happy medium of tolerance to high volume shooting and lower weight so that I can run around all day carrying it.

Do you like it? Does it weigh a ton? If you had it to do over again would you do it the same? If I order a McMillian A5 will I need to tell them what size barrel is going in it. Going with a 24" barrel could I get the same accuracy with something around 1" at the muzzle? Thanks for the input.

It'd be a cold day in hell before I'd go with a straight cylinder heavy bbl for anything but an unlimited BR rail gun, or something like Frank's F-class rig. Rem sender/varmint or hvy Palma is as heavy as I want to use. Just finished a 260 Imp 30* on a Howa SA, with a 26" Krieger sendero contour, PTG DBM, McM adjustable A5, Sightron SIII 6-24x50 in TPS TSR aluminum rings on an EGW aluminum 20 MOA sloped rail, Harris bipod, and it weighs 14.3lbs empty. This is my 2nd 260 Imp 30* - first one is on a SA 700, everything else the same, but with a Bushnell HDMR 34mm ERS in Seekins rings & NF steel base, Harris bipod - weight 14.7lbs. I put a Harrell's tactical brake on the Howa, and have a TB 30BA brake/mount on the M700. Recoil is very comfortable with the M700; haven't shot the Howa yet, as I just finished putting it together last night.

1st of +1 to what Dennis (flatland1) said.

Would I do it again the 1.250" str. blank? On this particular gun? Yes! Why? The F-Class Open weight limit is like 22#. My gun weighs right at 20#. So I want all the weight I can get in that particular gun so it recoils less and the gun tracks better on the joystick rests and rear bag. It's basically like a bench gun.

Most of my other guns I'm running a mod. Med. Palma or Rem. Varmint type contour. It keeps the weight down and the gun shoots just as good as the heavier M40/M24 type contour or the MTU contour straight taper barrels etc...I see no performance difference in terms of accuracy etc...

Modded med. palma in what way? Fluted?
Would you recommend fluting the medium palma to save weight or is the weight savings negligible for say a 23" finished barrel?

I like the Medium Palma contour, I've shot a Light Palma and the problem that I found was not that it wouldn't shoot over and over and over, it was that with a longer string of fire the heat generated made a mirage problem that I couldn't see the target well enough.

I get a contour cut for me from Hawk Hill Custom on their barrels that's a little lighter than MP and a little heavier than the LP, it works nicely and balances well.

Thrusty, On a 23" finish length med. palma if it was me? I wouldn't flute it. Save your money. It's only going to take out approx. .30#. If that weight savings means a lot to you and you want to part with the extra $$$ then that's a decision you would have to make.

If you don't mind weight, Bartlein will make you a truck axle of a barrel, as Mr. Green said. Just ask Bartlein to make you a zero taper barrel and they'll do it.
I can tell you that I have a 20" bbl in the GAP #7 contour, which is one of the larger offerings, and that thing is HEAVY for a "shorty" rifle.
