Savage guys??? Which savage to buy??

Why, please? My Model 10 chambers fine, shoots fine, and ejects fine. So why enhance what already works great?

As others have said...its a known issue with Savages. I've got one that didn't work worth a damn and the SSS kit fixed it right up, another that does okay but may get the upgrade all the same.

Running short OAL cases like 6BR, 300 AAC, etc. are especially problematic.

If your rifle functions well then rock on, but be aware the extractor and ejector (in particular) are common failure points that can be aggravating at times and might cost points if it happens a match.

Put another way...its $8 well spent.

I suppose spending $8.00 to have a part on the shelf if and when you need one won't hurt anything worse than add a little more clutter if you don't need it. I shoot .308 and 6.5CR and haven't had any issues. I guess tossing out the caveat "yet" can always be useful. OTH, I've had issues with the renowned actions so perhaps problems are not limited to Savage? For the comment about hot rounds, been there, done that and all that happened was rounds going down range. Not saying is can't or won't happen.

I know sooner or later the trans in my truck will go south but I'm not going to stash a spare in my garage in preparation until such happens. I had a garbage disposal go out once but I still don't bunker a spare for the day the one in place now happens to fail. We aren't down range where "one is none and two is one" anymore. If you are that's a different ball game. Extreme comparisons but the principle is the same. Fair enough?

I have 4 Savage rifles and I have not had this problem. Is there any warning like does it start to get weak ejection or does it just quit working?

Last question savage fellas....found a deal on model 10 in 308. It's the tactical version with the junk plastic stock. Anything special about this? HeavIER barrel, not really that heavy, and says tactical on the bolt.....

I'm not sure exactly when they stopped putting "Tactical" on the bolt. However, I know that the older models with the staggered magazine and shorter (4.25") screw spacing had that. So, that would be my first concern. If you plan on changing the stock, it might be harder to find one in that spacing, depending on what stock/chassis you're looking for. That's something I would research a bit, first.

I do have a stock inbound and that's one of my main concerns, the 4.4. Had this guy measure it and he says it's 4.4. I'm not sure what the trigger is.

If he measured correctly, then it's probably good to go. I THINK the Accutrigger was pretty much standard by the time they switched to the center feed magazine/4.4" spacing, but don't hold me to that.

If its an older model you will be getting a 4.27 screw spacing, I have two of them, its a good gun, just change the extractor. You wont have a prob getting a stock or chassis for it, I have my two in a Mcreees and a B&C, I would skip the B&C and get the LRT from SSS or Stockys Bobby Hart LRT. I got my accutrigger worked on by Larry Racine in NH, he did a good job, get it down to 2lbs, right where I wanted it. The bolt will have a long handle, its should shoot close to 1/2 inch groups. Pay attention when you are ordering scope mount bases, they are different.

Thanks again guys. I will be able to check it myself as we will do FTF, wasn't gonna waste my time if it wasn't 4.4.....AJerry, I already have a stock inbound in a 4.4 DBM, that's why it kind of mattered. Otherwise I have seen stocks for the shorter spaced actions as well

Here is my Hog Hunter in a Bobby Hart LRT, I like this little shooter.I still have the green plastic stock that came with it if you want it, its 4.40 screw space.

Not meaning to derail the thread, but how hot does the round have to be to break the extractor? Will hot enough to cause the bolt to stick, flattening out the primer when fired qualify?

The point is that some of anything breaks eventually on everything. I've done the above because that's sometimes part of the experimental process of working up loads. The difference between a great round and a hot round can be very little. What I have noticed in those forum is a lot of derision directed towards Savage guns and their owners. There's a few that actually own and shoot Savage rifles that are well worth listening to but far too many use ancient history or internet hearsay as their guide to quality when moving forward, failing to accurately research changes in policy and procedure since their last experience.

Lot's of makers make good firearms. Savage happens to be one of them. Lots of makers make firearms that sometimes are not as good as they should have been Savage is also one of them. You can include Remington in both categories, so the good and bad is not limited to a particular brand.

The only problem I have ever seen with an extractor on a Savage bolt was with a primer pocket that blew out on some bad brass in an Axis. Even then, it only knocked the extractor loose. Nothing was broken and we were able to put it back together in just a few seconds. Not saying that one couldn't break, but I've put thousands of rounds through Savage rifles and this is the only issue I've ever seen with one.

What's going to be the cheapest savage that I can use the bolt face for 6.5-284 norma? Want top bolt release, accutrigger, and DBM.

You guys are making me regret spending so much money on my 10Fcp-sr.

Why is that? Is there something lacking in your FCP-SR? I had Savage build me a FCP-SR in their custom shop, as I am a south paw, and I couldn't be more pleased. I've had to work out some things and wish it used AW magazines but it is a very nice "factory" rifle.

Just the recommendations that it's better to buy a cheap one and customize it. I'm perfectly happy with the performance but it wasn't cheap by any means.
Edit*-I have had some feeding difficulties with the magazine but that's my only complaint. Maybe, a sticky bolt handle at times but I only have 50-75 rounds through it.
