Went to check the surf today at Blacks Beach in San Diego, and came across this at the Torrey Pines Gliderport (Torrey Pines Gliderport - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

It appears to be and old .50 BMG casing (caliper'd the neck ID), not that interesting, but one has to wonder where it came from. This area is in the general flight path of aircraft departing MCAS Miramar, so my guess would be that it may have fallen out of a helo or something. Camp Callan used to be right around the corner in the 40's, possibly including where I was, but my memory doesn't recall how far back .50 BMG has been in use.

I'll try to clean it up and get some info out of the headstamp, if there's anything left visible.

And for those of you who do surf:

It was good. Really good.

Nice surf shot but Is that all you were looking for at Black's beach?

Haha, I hope that's all he was looking for. I lived in La Jolla for 5 years and been to the glider port and Blacks Beach many times. Always got a unwanted visual every time I was there.

Just because it looks like a manatee does not mean that it is.

When I was stationed in Okinawa we would find stuff like that fairly regularly when we went surfing or spear fishing. I was stationed at Miramar for 2 years and it would be possible for that to have came out of a bird at some point. Don't the SWCC school guys do some training with blanks somewhere in that area also?

Tapatalk ate my spelling.

The orange mushroom forest was out, eyes on feet as soon as you touch sand. It was well worth it though, one of the better days I've surfed Blacks in recent years. Solid 6-8 ft with a few near double overhead canyon dwellers.

Callan was an AAA training facility that had small arms ranges as well, I'd imagine they'd have MG ranges as well. And I don't believe SWCC does anything near there, I believe their stuff is done on SCI and Pendleton, as NSW has some ranges up there.

Have you seen many sharks off Blacks?

Never, whenever it's big, which is really the only time to surf Blacks, the dolphins come out and ride and jump through waves (pretty awesome to watch), and they scare the sharks away. I've actually been ran off a wave there by a pod, and there was a guy a few year back who had one land on his back and fractured a few vertebrae.
