I'm getting ready to do a re-barrel on a rifle of mine in 7-300 WSM, I am planning on having the chamber and throat cut around the variable of one of these bullets to fit magazine length. I chose the cartridge based on the fact that the rifle is currently a 270 WSM with a barrel that's torched and the fact that I'll actually be able to get Norma 270WSM brass and just neck up with a mandrel then size and load. vs going to the 7WSM and having to fire form. Anyway on to the question.

Obviously the Hybrid has a better BC, but I'm wondering which of the 2 (hybrid or VLD) will give me the most case capacity considering that the OAL will be dependent on the magazine. I know the difference will be small but since I'm having the chamber and throat cut to accommodate the magazine length, I'm already giving up a bit of capacity in order to run the heavy high BC bullets in the first place. So which bullet is longer and therefore going to have to be seated deeper to get it in the magazine?

EDIT: Is there anyone here that has some of the 180 gr Hybrids handy that can give me some dimensions off them? The dimensions I need are as follows.

Total Length of the bullet
Length from the tail to the ogive
Length of the boat tail

From those 3 dims I should be able to determine all I need to know. Thanks in advance.

I don't have both bullets here, but the hybrid must be longer, higher bc? The 270 WSM has plenty of case capacity for the hybrid, I'm sure you can't fill it full.

I'm planning for it to be kind of a crossover rig both hunting and maybe a couple matches here and there but I'd like to keep the barrel in good shape for the long haul. I'm certain I can find an appropriate hunting bullet that will shoot well enough for that task even if its set up for the hybrids. I'll do some looking for someone local that has them so I can measure them.

I really like the 180 hybrid for hunting, out of my 7mm Dakota I took a big antelope, a whitetail, and my dad took a mule deer and an elk. It seems to be a really good bullet that provides great wound channels all the while penetrating quite deeply

Well that's handy, one bullet that does it all would be a damn nice proposition. I knew of and have used the VLD's for hunting but you never really know until you try a bullet so I wasn't going to hang my hat on that as an option. Good to know it is an option, and that may have sealed the deal for it.

quick bump to see if anyone can help with some dimensions from the hybrid.

Define "Length from the tail to the ogive" and maybe I can help you with the measurements. What tool or what diameter do you want the ogive measured with/at?

Total Length of the bullet. Mine 1.543" Berger says 1.529"
Length from the tail to the ogive? Mine .796" Stoney point tool w/280 insert. Base to start of ogive Mine ~.685" Berger says .679"
Length of the boat tail. Mine .220" Berger says .220"

I use a the Hornady comparotor for my ogive measurements (yeah it's not perfect but will suffice for my uses in this respect) with the 7mm/.280 insert.

so given the Hornady tool, basically measuring just the bullet in the same manner you'd measure COL on a loaded case, base of the bullet/tail end to the ogive.
