I am mounting a Nightforce 2.5-10X32 on my MSTN JLZ upper and plan to use a Nightforce Uni-Mount. I spoke with someone at Nightforce today and he recommended the 1.125", but as I look around at what others use I see mostly 1.375" (including in LL's review of the 2.5-10X32). I've used a Larue at 1.5", and ADM at 1.47", and currently have Leupold Mark IV rings at 1.4" for other scopes. I think all of these were all a little high, but I'm not sure by how much and I was using different optics.

Do any of you have experience with this scope, if so what do you guy's think about the mounting height?

Re: Nightforce Uni-Mount Height

It really depends on the shape of your face and preference. If you feel the other ones are too tall, then the 1.375 may be too tall for your liking as well. For offhand shooting some guys like the glass a little higher, however.

I have both NF unimounts sitting here. With a standard A2 stock, the 1.125 is perfect height for "my eye." With the 1.375, I would need to build up the A2 stock or get aftermarket one, but the 1.375 is needed with the larger objective (like a 56mm).

Re: Nightforce Uni-Mount Height

I'm assuming you're using this on a flat top AR with no riser, but let us know if you have something different.

What kind of stock do you have? I have the 1.375 on my MK 12 Mod 1 with a UBR stock. SS 3-9x scope. That setup it is still a touch too high for me when firing traditional prone. BUT, I have high cheek bones and have always had high cheek pieces, including on my M40A1. A lot of guys had a hard time shooting my rifle back then without mashing their face against the foam cheek piece. Just remember that everyone's face is different so what works for one shooter isn't necessarily good for another.

The scope you have mounted won't make that big of difference as regardless of the scope you're still coming to the center of the optic. The only difference the scope makes is the size of your exit pupil and how forgiving it is. That can make a difference when going for a lower mount if you plan on shooting from several different positions, weak hand, etc. Going to a lower mount might prohibit gaining proper eye placement as it has less room for error/adjustment.

I won't be changing my mount to the lower one simply for these reasons. It's a practical/tactical rifle, not bench rest or F class and I want it versatile.

Bottom line is in my opinion with a tactical setup you can't go wrong with a 1.375, but you can with a 1.125.

Re: Nightforce Uni-Mount Height

I run a LMT SOPMOD stock, and no riser just the the standard AR flat top. I shoot a lot off-hand (supported), sitting, and some from the bench--no real opportunity for prone at this time. I think I'll go with the 1.375, and if it's too high I'll switch it up.

Thanks for the input!

Re: Nightforce Uni-Mount Height

You should have no problem at all with that setup.

BTW, I really like the Unimount. Very solid and versatile without the hefty weight, and you can easily see your elevation turret markings unlike others I've tried with the screws on the top.

Re: Nightforce Uni-Mount Height

Re25 - the only BUIS I think may fit is the KAC Micro 300. It's the lowest, so if it doesn't fit I don't think anything will...

See Post #4

Would you mind posting a photo of your setup, with something I can use to reference the height over the rail?

Thanks,

Re: Nightforce Uni-Mount Height

I think Re25 said it -- if using buis' is important then the 1.375 is the correct one to use..... it is what we use on our Mk12's specifically to clear the KAC buis

Re: Nightforce Uni-Mount Height

I run a 1.125" but I have a new POF HSR rail that allows my objective to drop down into where the rail would be on the top of the handguard.

1.375" is a little low for BUIS if they are anything but the lowest KAC 300m is the lowest I've found). I only think BUIS's belong on a carbine that runs and electronic sight. They are tits on a boar for SPR/DMR in my opinion. If the rifle's in a role where over 4X is the needed mag its not a CQB type role.
