Gunsmithing What FFL

Hello, I am trying to get things rolling on opening a shop and it is starting to get a little confusing! I build up long range rifles for customers that provide the action then I chamber and attach new barrels and other services along these lines. I am not a full bore manufacture just builds and repairs that require machines or special tools. I am located in Ohio and can not find much help on the type off FFL I would need to obtain. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I to want to start a Gunsmithing shop and range when I get back to Montana. I emailed the BATF and the regional rep emailed me back with a list of the requirements for Florida were I currently live. I have a NFA attorney and he's setting up everything. I am going through AGI (American Gunsmithing Institute) for school which the VA pays for as one of my benefits for education. It does seem like a hassle but it's smoothing out. I was a little nervous about the BATF but they hold all the requirement. So, as long as I am in compliance all is well. I would look into the BATF website, then email your regional rep with questions, it's free and for what it's worth it's right from the source. I know...no one like them but it helped me.

Richard, as long as you don't plan on buying firearms to build on and later resale for a profit, a Type 1 is all that's required. If the customer already owns the firearm, and is bringing it to you for mod's, then a Type 1 will do. Like it was already said above, it will be a lot less crap to keep track of and report. Not to mention the tax you must charge your customers so you can pay the government if you go over the 49 builds allowed per year without tax. Type1, and sorry I couldn't email you an answer back fast enough.

Thank you guys for all the help. So just reiterating the type 1 will allow me to do all custom work to a customers gun just a lot less crap. That includes any gun smithing just as long as I am not purchasing to upgrade and re sale for profit. And it will also allow me to buy and resale firearms?
