When is it safe to use my suppressor?

At what time during my load development is it safe to start using my suppressor? Or do I wait until I have found my most accurate load?

I'd use it while testing. Suppressors alter harmonics and MV.

Unless you are doing anything really outside the book or testing subsonics I would recommend doing load development with the can on.

When I'm testing loads I have my suppressor on. I find it cuts down on off the wall readings and no start / stop error messages.

With the suppressor (Surefire 556-212) the velocity is usually in the area of 50 fps faster than no suppressor attached.

If you are going to shoot with it on you might as well test when it is on - train as you fight with the same equipment. I never understand having a suppressor and not using it all the time- If you have a suppressor why would you ever shoot without it. Friends don't let friends shoot unsuppressed; it is undignified.

If using subsonic loads, start using the suppressor ONLY AFTER YOU HAVE PROVEN THAT YOUR BULLETS ARE FLYING STRAIGHT!
Shoot through cardboard within 1 foot of the muzzle, then at various distances out to your maximum intended range.
If you are making nice round holes you're good to go. You DO NOT want baffle strikes due to unstable bullets exiting the bore. After that, best to develop loads with the suppressor on.

Any load development that you do with the end goal being to shoot the load suppressed needs to be accomplished with the suppressor attached to the rifle. If you're running a QD can make sure the break adapter is squeaky clean prior to installing the can so you can eliminate as many variables as possible with the rifle and suppressor combination.

Like everyone else said, if not subs then shoot how you will be shooting. Cans can and will alter zeros, harmonics, and MV. Some aren't as much as others. I would want to know if there was any difference either way and wouldn't want a load that shot much different one way ot the other. Like in La we cant hunt suppressed, SO, I would want to make sure I knew my dope and zero with out it but if shooting with it on I want to know how it will react. I wont be shooting one way or the other 100% of the time. Cans can make it tougher to get through some places and be heavier. Use it how you intend to shoot it and note the difference it does make. And make sure its repeatable.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did my load testing yesterday with my can on and everything worked out great.

Great, hope all goes well. Love the cans. Cant wait for my shark to be here just another month or so

My buddy has a 338can but shoots his 338's without it. He doesn't like the recoil as much (its quite a push), and after a couple rounds, mirage off it becomes an issue (this can be solved with the suppressor wraps however).
