Gathering parts vs. standard packages

I did some archive searches but didn't find my question. I'm sure it's here somewhere and so feel free to point me in the right direction. These thoughts are related to a custom bolt project.

I've owned some nice custom rifles including GAP. My thoughts lately have gone towards gathering parts for a custom build the way I want it instead of the packaged builds most shops are producing. Nothing wrong with their builds (and many offer lots of options) but I'm wondering about doing a project that is spec'd with the parts I want.

I haven't done this before and wondered about those who have done this. I figure if you're going to do this, it's for you and resale will not be the same as a known package from a known shop. However, spec'd out thoughtfully, the resale should still be decent.

Those who have gone this route, what were your reasons? Any regrets? Anything you would do different next time? Your thoughts on which shops are willing to go this route with decent delivery times? I know sometimes the long waits are due to waiting on parts. Any thoughts on gathering parts for a build and handing them over to a reputable shop? Might be an interesting way to really get involved with a project...take some time paying for parts...and then hand it off to the pros. Might even speed up the build time if parts were all in hand.

I did or am doing my first build This yr.

I opted to buy parts and drop it off at a Smith for machine work and Assembly.
I did it this way one you can shop around find what you want and get it at best price. Sometimes you can find items in Stock from vendors that builders don't know of or use.

Easier on the budget, buy it as you go. As the wallet allows. Ex.

Thanks for the replies. I will read up on the group accurizing buy thread and the Gradious course.

Thanks. I caught that typo and looked up his class...also the group buy mentioned above.
