STOLEN RIFLE - 1/19/2014 (Oregon City, Oregon)

It's possible. Some police where I use to live use to mark the tires of people at the bar so that way they can tell how long they were there and pull them over. People found out and had a fit and the police was forced to stop.

It is possible, we just don't have any evidence of it.

It is possible, we just don't have any evidence of it.

Could always use chalk, differ colors mean different things. Doesn't have to be license or tire. There r a few ways to do it. Chalk removes easy and with a quick wipe for no evidence. Unless u look your car over every time u leave u would never know. There would be no evidence.

At our range I have not heard of anything being stolen at the firing line. It could happen, just have not heard about it.

That's because most people who go to ranges are good, upstanding citizens.

Stolen Rifle Recovered

I wanted to report back to those that have kept an eye out for my rifle. It’s great to see a group of people willing to help out others that they may not know or may never meet. Thank you all.
I got a call last night from the investigator of the case to report that they had found my gun! That was the good news, the bad news is that it was found at the bottom of the Clackamass River. It looks like the person that stole it threw it off the bridge. Two fisherman saw it as the floated the river and pulled it out with a net. A county sheriff just happen to be watching them and immediately made contact. Bad news is the stock busted and the part not attached to the barreled action was not recovered….(floated down the river).
The scope received damage, (hope NF covers water damage).
I have not actually seen it and most likely will not be able to for two weeks. They will not release it to me without a background check, which they cannot do as the county sheriff. It has to be mailed in. Side not, the lady in the property room looks at me and says “are you even allowed to own a gun?” My immediate answer, if I am not able to own a gun that wouldn’t that makes me a felon? Wouldn’t it be pretty stupid for coming to the county sheriff to get my gun back!

The Oregon City Police department was a pleasure to work with. I think they went above and beyond what they normally do for stolen property.

Hopefully it's in a usable condition and shoots straight aside from the stock and hopefully NF takes care of you.

This really sounds like a bitter sweet kind of thing and not trying to be insensitive but are the cops looking for an ex? Sounds like a grudge?

Could have been someone looking for something they could move quickly. When the found such a unique rifle, they chucked it knowing they would never move it. Idk just a thought.

Glad to hear it has been recovered. I hope you don't have too much grief from the Sheriff getting it back.

Aint that some sh!t!! What a bunch of punks.

Even worse that the stock is damaged. Which is a beautiful Maple stock by the way. Mr Russo does damn fine work dont he?

And to think they threw it over a bridge.

Atleast it was recovered, but man thats just bad all-around.

Also, about the property-room lady: WTF did she mean by that? Was she one of those extra-dumb liberal-types that think guns are already banned/heavily restricted for the most part? As Ive met quite a few up in this here big (hypocrite) city of Atlanta, and theres plenty of Left(nut)-swinging people who think rifles/handguns are already nearly banned/restricted and/or very hard and tedious to get ahold of. Not yet moth3rf*(k3r$!!

Or did she think you looked too young? Or think you looked like a felon? LOL seriously Im just trying to get inside the head of someone(who works for a PD no less)/why she thought that? Thank god shes not running the streets, sounds quite prejudiced against firearms-owners. Again, I wasnt there so IDK what was going through her head, hence Im trying to figure it out. The picture I currently have is an overweight lady with inadequate knowledge of the Constitution and a gun-hating mindset.

wow glad to hear it recovered, shitty condition it's in

definitely a beauty before it got destroyed

property room lady needs some schooling with a smack up the head

Do not forget to file a claim with your homeowner's/renters insurance policy. Its worth a shot.

Thanks guys, I'm hoping that they at least dried it after pulling it out of the river.

For the lady officer...I diffenitly look old enough to own one, I was dressed in a suite so I didn't look like a dirt bag ( wait the only people that wear suits are sales guys-so maybe I did look like a dirt bag;))

I was just dumbfounded she would ask. She said it pretty snarky.

Looking forward to seeing what's salavagble from it. Ill update this with pictures when I get it back.

As for the other rifle that went missing in the same area... I wonder if it might be worth it to throw on some skins and a tank and take a peek below that bridge?

I just don't see thieves doing something like this unless they though they were getting close to getting caught. It would have been more profitable to sell it for a single joint than to toss it in a river.

If nothing else they could have parted it out.

Like what was posted earlier, it seems more like somebody was trying to settle a score.

Sorry for your loss, hopefully you can salvage something from it.

You are of course thinking that drug addicts/thieves have an ounce of logic in their messed up brains. Having worked with a few "pot heads" over the last 25 years I could not even start to describe how horribly wrong you are. I don't care what anyone says smoke pot 6-7 times a day for 20+ years and it messes you up. While maybe not as bad as meth, I have watched it happen to 3 people and they are not as bright/smart as they were 20 years ago. I have seen a dozen or more over the years and they never seemed real smart but they came and went before I could witness any long term effects.

I would imagine as someone else said that once they took a good look at what they had they knew it was to hot to keep. Kind of like stealing a Rembrandt or Picasso, What the hell do you do with it once you have it.

Funny same exact picture I had, long before I got to your post.

Not a bad idea but the other rifle was stolen on the other side of town, which I realize doesn't mean much if you aren't familiar with Portland but with all the rivers and crossings we have, it would be a crazy coincidence. Without consulting a map I don't think it is possible to get from one location to the other without a handful of water crossings.

It's not my place to talk about the other rifle but it is doubtful it will be found. Guaranteed it will not be found complete. There have been a lot of developments with it early on, a few that kept me up a couple nights as they progressed, hoping that someday that case is closed and can be discussed fully so everyone can understand the scam the people who stole it are running.

How do we donate to refurbish your rifle?

I would be willing to put $25 on it.

Generous offer and much appreciated, but with them finding the rifle and the insurance company stepping up, I will be back in the game very shortly.

Some great shooting buddies, Gunsmiths, and Vendors really stepped up to get a match gun up and running. I should have a new rifle up and running by Monday. We have 5 weeks tell JC Steel and our local match on the 8th of this month. I will have 4 days to get a load done! ;)

The way the officer put it was the person that stole it was very well known to be a Dirt Bag. And with the extra heat of steeling something this unique and expensive they new they were screwed so they ditched it. It was thrown roughly 20 min from my house up a road that is less traveled. Heck I can think of 5 other bridges closer that would have dropped it in much deeper water. This one was just off the beaten path.

The said reality is some D bag still lives in my neighborhood and knows that I have nice things. My concern now is the safety of my family.

Looks like the wife will be getting some extra range time!

This is gonna sound more shady than anything but I'm in your neck of the woods at odd hours pretty often. I can start taking short detours by your place at those odd hours just to make a presence.

Incredible luck! Glad you are going to get your rifle back.

P.S. I had a stolen rifle recovered in OK - I marched into the police office, went to talk to detective, checked the serials, and marched out with my rifle in an "evidence" box. The only thing they checked was ID. I don't know how would a police station do a "background" check since they are not part of federal system (not an FFL nor federal agency).

Dog. Get a good one.

OP~~ hope you got your load developed in time and had a successful competition.(excellent work by the LEO's finding the "sticky fingers")
Just wondering if you managed to get your rifle back yet (from LEO) and do you have the pics you mentioned posting yet?

Regards
Gypsy

Glad you got some closure. Tossed into the Clack and found is pretty amazing... What bastards!

I'm curious how the scope held up (or not).

Our P.D. in a VERY gun-friendly state had the same policy of doing a basic background prior to releasing a gun. The issue arose when someone had gotten a firearm BACK from L.E. only to be later stopped with it and federally prosecuted for "Felon in Possession". They raised the issue that they were given the gun by LE so it must have been okay for them to have it. After that it became policy to do a background and ensuring that the PD wasn't "furnishing a firearm to a felon".

To the OP, great news on at least getting it back, albeit shaken and stirred.

Sad to hear this Willys

Sounds like the investigation is on with evidence & a short list of suspects. I wouldn't hold your breath on the rifle return - if there is a print or just the rifle itself to incriminate the perp as trials take time. Get your serial number & purchase receipt to contact NightForce & see if they can do any warranty on a scope that fell in the river.

Portland has more snow than we've seen in many years but the match still went on yesterday and looking at the scoresheet I'd say that NFX is still working just fine. 2nd place finish ain't too shabby.

Our local home range has 5500 members. Aside from those of us who shot the match there were only 8 other people to come through the gate yesterday. It was not pretty out. And I realize there are a lot of folks laughing at the less than a foot of snow but keep in mind, we rarely see an inch of snow maybe a couple days a year, if any at all.

I finally got it back form the LEO and had it sent off to the gunsmith for evaluation. It looks like it was left with some water in it, so the rust nice!

Here is the damage to the Stock. Ya my trunk is messy, I did not want to be waving a gun around in the police station parking lot. Figure it would only end badly for me.

Its crazy how much the wood swelled up. It was finished in auto clear coat and it seemed to just pop it right off.

damn thats a crazy story, glad you got it back though! I bet the action will still work for another build!

so is this a diff barrel action? i noticed on page 1 the rifle action was coated black.is that the same scope? dumb punks makes me wanna tied them 1000yd and give them 5rds ammo chance to live..(if i miss)

on his "wanted" poster, he states that the barrel is a brushed stainless.

This is correct, I just had a new barrel screwed on about two months ago. I had not had time to get it coated yet.

The action will be usable just needs to be cleaned up and done new parts installed.

Glad you got the rifle back, sorry about the condition, really sorry about the stupid LEO's. But there seems to be a nationwide stupidity epidemic among the LEO community and that includes the District atty's and judges!! Even in ND we are not immune.

Ugh. I really wanted to shoot this match, but the threat of freezing rain, and not being able to get home afterwards kept me from going.

Sorry to read of your ordeal. I would expect the scope will check-out and that this story will become an advertisement for nf in the near future.

Seeing that beautiful stock broken makes me sick. I have thieves.
