Alright, so I've decided to start a new gun build. I just finished my .308 and now I'm looking to build up a .300wm from the ground up. action, barrel, and stock. This gun will be used for long distance shooting and sub moa grouping. my budget is around $3,000 without optics. right now I'm looking at surgeon rifle action, krieger barrel, timney trigger, and I haven't decided on a stock yet. any advice or recommendations is appreciated. Im not looking to just buy a rifle because I'm doing this project for fun and experience

do you have a line on Surgeon already? if not you may need to start looking at another action, then pick your favorite Manners

Its going to be tough to do that on your budget, especially with a surgeon action which are selling high right now because you can't get them at the moment. The action alone will eat up well over half of your budget. To keep costs down I'd look at stiller. They're right around $1k shipped with rail and are in stock and Bugholes.com.

Even going with the stiller you still probably won't have enough in your budget to do a fiberglass stock with bottom metal and pillar bedding. I'd look into one of the many chassis system or one of the manners with mini chassis if you want a more traditional stock. Most are under a grand so you'll have a grand left for your barrel, trigger, and work. It's cutting it tight but it's doable.

600-1000yrds

Why not do a 6mm or 6.5mm? You can perform just as good as a 300WM on targets at those distances and you'll save some money. You won't need to run a brake to tame recoil which saves $100 in threading plus the cost of the brake (say $250 total) and you can get much better barrel life, better brass life, and use cheaper bullets and less powder.

I've been shooting the .308 for several years and I'm looking for a heavier round to play around with

I love a 300WM. But a WSM is great too. A factory R700 5R wouldn't be a bad rig. I shot a new one the other day that was very accurate.

My 300wm is getting finished right now. I went with...
Krieger 10tw rem varmint with 338ba brake @ 24"
Manners T5A Chassis painted by shortbus
Surgeon 1086
Rifle basix
Work done by William Roscoe at Louisiana Precision

Good call on the components Sounds very nice, would of opted for a different stock but all in sounds great, Now for the important part What Glass to Use??

Just broke my Bughole 300WM in and i do love that caliber. Used a Stiller acton and it is close to your budget.

Someone had a Surgeon $off certificate for sale the other day here. Search it out

I just had a 300wm built back in November. Stiller action lefty. Krieger barrel 1-10 twist Jewell trigger and Mcree chassis. Surefire brake. After all the work it was around 3k.
