Help me! 7mm Mag vs. .300 Win Mag?

I want to build a long range rifle that I will use for both target shooting and hunting of deer, elk, etc.

I would like to build off the Remington 700 model and drop it into a Whiskey 3 chassis.

What are your opinions of the 7mm Rem Mag vs. the .300 Win Mag?

Also, could anyone point me in the best direction to buy just a barreled action with trigger group? Thanks!

I would go 7mm mag all the way just because I like the 7mm bullets. Both cartridges will get the job done though.

For ballistics the 300 will have the edge with 215 and 230 grain bergers and bore life will likely be too close to call. Both will do what you are wanting. One upside to the 7mm right now is it may be easier to locate components but then again there are a lot of good 30 cal bullets that will work well while the 7mm will have fewer options.

I have them both and choose the 7RM. You can't go wrong with either. Might consider the 7mm Rogue, the 7/300 or one of the 7mm variants that fit in a standard long action. If you can push the 180 gr Berger at 3,000 fps or faster it is tough for anything else to rival it.

Define what primarily the rifle will be used for, choose a projectile and build from there.

Check out Bugholes for a barreled action. He has built several barreled actions for me and they all shoot good. The last one was a 300WM and really love that rifle.

The 7LRM is hard to beat for a mag fed longrange target/tactical/hunter type rifle. Go to my profile and search my post. I covered the 7LRM in a thread titled 7LRM vs 7SAUM.

I recently made the choice between the two. I saw that the 7RM had less recoil, and (in theory) more available components. Of course no one beyond hoarders seem to have primers and powder so... eh. :(

Really didn't see the need to make the step up to the 300WM for as little I'd be gaining over the 7mm. Will be using mine for elk as well.

Not to hijack your thread, but I have the same conundrum. My 300 WM is an absolute hammer and I love to shoot it. However, in order to get to the same BC as a 180 7mm .660 you have to shoot a 210 MK which are expensive or go to the 220-240 MK or other heavy 30 cal. I am in the process now of gathering components for a new 7mm. If it were me and for the jobs you describe I would go with a 7mm mag and never look back.

When a rifle has to pull double duty and the game includes elk to quote Elmer Keith "there is no substitute for bullet weight and caliber" and the bigger the better

A Remington 5R in 300WM or sendero would be a good start. There are pros and cons to both calibers but they are similar depending on components. In either case run heavy bullets and consider a muzzle brake unless it's strictly for hunting (or you like the ride the lightning). 300WM will cost more to feed or reload for, but packs more wallop up close.

I like my 300wm, but there is no right answer here. You just have to decide which one you like most and get one.
