Still haven't decided on a scope. I thought I had it figured out deciding on a NF ATACR. But after talking to a very experienced friend I decided I want FFP instead of SFP. I looked at the NF F1 but like the features on the Steiner scopes (Duoscale, MSR reticle, etc). I'm in my 50's so I have old eyes, so my question is which would be better for older eyes 3-15x50 or the higher powered 5-25x56. This will be going on a Rem 700 5r. Most shooting will be at the range, and occasionally hunting. Thanks...

All of Team Steiner is using 5-25 MSRs. You'll use 15-25 more than 3-5. YMMV, but my 2 cents.

I have the Steiner 5-25. It is a GREAT tool...wonderful glass, very precise adjustments, etc. I love everything about it except for the size. I have it on a gun that it is appropriate for, but I think that the 3-15 would be a better size scope for all around use on a Rem 700 5R( I'm making a big assumption that your Rem700 is chambered in 308?). I've got a NF F1 on my 308 that I love, and am trying to free up some funds to get a Steiner 3-15 to go along with my big Steiner.

I had both. Sold the 3-15 ONLY because these matches these days are adding paper "boost the match round count" stages and you sometimes have to quickly find small numbers and the high zoom is really nice. If not for that I would not have traded in for the 5-25.

As an almost 57 year old, I think the most magnification that you can get the better off you are. I have not had any kind of eye surgery, but all things considered when I get behind a good rifle/scope combination the one with the higher scope magnification always wins with my eyes. I might not shoot better, but I see better.
I am really leaning for the 5-25X Steiner.

D_Tros's 5-25 has a sun shade and the 3-15 does not.

Looks like I'm going to go with the 5-25x56 with the MSR reticle. I want to buy one scope that I won't grow out of. Buy once, cry once. That way if and when I move up to a different rifle/caliber I won't have to upgrade my glass. I was thinking about the 3-15, its a little less expensive, and will work great on my .308. but I think in the long run, with my eyesight getting older, and in keeping with the buy once mantra , the 5-25x56 will fill all my needs and give me room to grow. Just have to save the extra $300.. I'm getting really anxious to shoot my new rifle and the waiting is killing me. Thank you for all the info. I'm going to use seekins rings, not sure which 20moa base yet.
I think you should consider a 40moa base instead. My Steiner 5-25 mounted in a TRG 3-ring mount (30moa) gives me 23mils up. Will probably take a 40moa base to get the full 26mils on the turret.
How far do you get with 23 mils?

Lol I get the point your making but If given a choice why not set it up to be able to get the full 26mils that is available to the user.

Good choice. I have been shooting the 5 x 25 for a little over a year. 90% of the time I shoot it at around 15x as I feel it gives me the best field of view. The 10% I need the extra mag is were the Steiner shines. Nothing like zooming in on a small piece of steel that some match directors call a target. You will love the MSR recticle. I feel it is the best one out there.

Check with Scott at Liberty Optics for a Steiner. I just bought mine there and he took very good care of me.
Quickdraw40, 20, 30, 40 moa bases.... Now I'm confused... I'm new to long range shooting. I've been reading and for a .308 I thought the 20moa base would be the best match for a .308 (max effective range, BC of ammo, etc). Maybe you can school me up on the advantages of 20 vs 30 vs 40 moa bases, or point me to a link.

You can go with any base, 20 is standard, 40 will get you a little further at distances you'll probably never shoot.
The very first 5-25s were a LITTLE mushy. The new ones are crisp and the same as the 3-15s.

When is Steiner going to replace the older turrets? Can they give us a S/N range of when the new turrets hit the market (or vice versa, what range are affected by the mushy turrets)? Thats my only gripe with my 5-25, they are not nearly as positive as my PH or NF's.... They feel like my Luppy MK 4 's.

Frankly, I think the PHs are too hard to turn and hit a specific 0.1. That's the problem, it's a feel thing that is different for every person and you can't make everyone happy.

Agreed. To each his own... I personally like PH clicks.... at a minimum NF clicks (which are both positive and precise without disturbing the lay of the rifle). Unfortunately, my Steiner are just a little to mushy for my liking, BUT, it tracks true, great glass, great resolution, love the second turn indicator, and it's zero stop function is as simple as it gets!
