Rifle Scopes Voretex viper pst ffp 4x16 or 6x24

hey guys, I've been researching scopes for a couple of weeks, and I think I have settled on the vortex viperpst FFP to sit atop my savage 111 30.06. I am trying to get into the 1k game and for all the features I have looked at along with my budget constraints, the vortex looks great. my question is: which is better for 1000 yds, the 4-16x50 or the 6-24x50. I was originally thinking 6-24 but I have noticed a lot of you have a 4-16. What is the reasoning? is the PE distorted at higher magnifications. is the field of vision too narrow? what do you think?

I prefer to have a wider field of view at lower magnification than a 6x will offer. I love my PST 4-16x50 FFP. Rock solid scope, great glass. it isn't an F1, but its less than half the price.

I prefer more magnification, so the 6-24x.



Either will be a good choice.

I have only used the 4-16x out to 1000 so I can't speak for the 6-24x.
Had no problem with this scope and only had the magnification to 12x even with my vintage 50+ year old eye's.

More magnification... more magnification... I am givin it all she's got captain!!

My eyes need it. I can use the 6x with ease for hunting, but the 20x+ shines for detailed target work. 6-24 is my recommendation!!

If you hardly find yourself using the lower power, you might as well get the 6-24x for when you need that extra power. 4x vs 6x isn't too drastic whereas 16x vs 24x is significant IMO.

I went with the 6-24 as well. I figure all things being equal, it's better to be at 16x in the midrange of a scopes power rather than at the same 16x at the top end of a scope.

Im really happy with my 6-24, I can see hits in the paper targets we shoot at from the 300 meter line.

All my rifles I do mostly long range with I want at least 20X available. My shorter range guns have 3x15 or equal. I just bought a Vortex 4-16 today for a short barrel .223. It will be a 600 max range gun.YMMV. Rob

Newbie here, I just bought the PST 4x16-50, are the vortex scope rings any good, or should I buy something else? Also, what base would you recommend? The PST is going on a Remington 700 AAC-SD. Thanks

6-24. You will use the extra 8x on top more than the 2x on the bottom end.

The Vortex rings are made by Seekins. They are very good rings. No worrys about them. I have two sets.

I haven't looked through the 6-24 but I know the glass on my 4-16 I just got is comparable to a foggy walmart scope. No where near as clear as my 2.5-10 PST. Its going back to Vortex there has to be something wrong.

I have a 6- 24 and like the extra magnification. Another thing to keep in mind is the 4-16 is nearly 2 in shorter if size and weight is a factor.

I am no pro; but in my experience just the difference in magnification: I agree with the poster that you will use the detail available with the extra top end magnification more than you would use the lower end difference in magnification. I have trouble using 6x at ten yards or so, but do not need it for that often.. lol.. for me the higher magnification being available swings it.. unless the size and weight become a problem, and it seldom is for my uses. I need clarity and detail / sharpness and overall magnification available; I shoot most often at close range on 6x and very seldom feel the need for lower power, but often feel I needed more than 14x on the high end when I must see minute detailed images.. ymmv.

Depends on you every shooter is different I have both I have the 6-24 on my 6.5WSM because its my hunting rifle and I am fine with a 6x on the low end even for close shots. I have the 4-16 on my girlfriends .338 edge cause she needs the field of view to be able to easily find targets she gets lost with the high mag. So its all about what works for you.
