Hi everyone this is my first time posting so bear with me. Im trying to load subsonic 7.62x39 for a mini thirty. Im using remington brass with small rifle primer pockets. I enlarged the flashhole to 9/64 and when I seated my primer (win sm.rifle) I noticed the anvil didnt have much meat to rest against. I fired just a primer and noticed the anvil came out of the end of the barrel. Is the primer pocket enlargment only necessary on larger cases? (.308 .30-06) also I havnt decide on bullets and powder. Anyone have any recipes? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

9/64 is too large for a small primer, I use 7/64 max, with a large and then only sometimes.
If you use a mag primer you don't have to enlarge the flash hole at all for most shooting, with the bulk of the pistol powders out there. For 308 an 300wm I can help you but not the 39, never played with those in subs yet.

I would scrap the cases for sure.

Its not a good idea to drill out small rifle primer holes to that size. Just not a lot of room there like in the large rifle flash holes. FWIW I have never drilled out a flash hole, and I shoot a lot of subs. You can use proper filler, nice fluffy powder, or mag primers to help make sure everything lights alright.

What powder are you running? What twist? Are you 308 bore or .311?

180 round nose usually runs well and helps fill the case. If you are 308 bore, the hornady 160 ftx works well for me, as well as the sierra 30-30 style 150 and 170 flat nose bullets.

Cast bullets are great; they are my favorite by far for subs like this. Just make sure you get a good fit to your bore or you will get leading even at low velocity.

You are going to want a nice fluffy powder, and you are going to want to keep good load density. I try to keep it over 50pct to be safe and consistent.
I have done my loading with bolt rifles, but never with a semi. Things may be a little different for you, but I have had good luck with Trailboss and red dot in loads like this.
Be careful working with the faster pistol powders and weigh every charge. It is easy to overcharge them!

here is some reading to get you started:

It isn't really necessary on 308 either. I have used standard cases with no issues
I found I can open the holes, an use a mag primer, (this combo allows the powder charge weight to be dropped while still getting the same speed)and better the S/D an E/S. I get less speed with case filler in both the .308win and 300wm. Could be the powder of choice (700X) but found same, using many other combos.
I have loaded the powder packed it over the flash hole w/a piece of round Styrofoam cut from a coffee cup and the speed drops 150 fps +/- over larger flash hole using the same primer and bullet.

Thank you for the input I scrapped the cases. I will be using .308 bullets and I am not sure what size my bore is. I have heard that the minis may have a tapered bore to allow both .308 and .311 bullets.Correct me if im wrong. Also from what ive read my barrel is a 1in 9 twist. As far as powder goes I was thinking trailboss to start. I have unique hs-6, hp38, bullseye and h110. Has anyone found seating bullets backward to be beneficial? I have also heard that the bullets should be lubed even though they are copper jacketed. Any thoughts?

Backwards is for max stopping power w/a sub. Also you can make certain bullets fly better from a slower twist than they need when loaded backwards. I have used Bullseye, Clays, Red/Blue Dot, Unique, ect, but for me 700X is my go to. Fastest twist I have is 11.27 and it gets them to 400 yds nose on, w/o issue. Required twist is per the bullet you use.

I Don't do any of that! I just load up the trail boss and seat the bullet .
