Big question. AI, Sako TRG,DTA. GAP. Any help on which rifle to buy. Looking for a 308. Target and Hunting.

.....a little vague. It depends how much you want to pay, rifle preferences, & a myriad of other factors. There is plenty of good information to read up here. Try the SH search engine.

No question, I would buy a slightly used AI in the used section, spend the rest on glass.

Welcome to the Hide.

I agree with Hunt4life given little information on your needs/wants. Look in the used section here for a great deal. For me GAP would be a good choice.

I love my DTA rifle. It is about a foot shorter than a standard style bolt action rifle with the same barrel length. It also hides its weight very well if you are taking offhand shots. For hunting I would take the DTA over the others mentioned, unless you were going with a lightweight hunting rifle from GAP. Out here in UT, I do a fair amount of hiking while hunting and a lighter rifle is appreciated.

The new AI AT and AXMC rifles will be sweet too. They are a bit heavier and longer than the DTA and will not be out until May.

I just picked up a couple DT SRS and Covert rifles for DT yesterday and have a few guns that are not spoken for yet if you are interested.

The guys at Mile High might still be running a close out deal on the AI AE MkIII, it's worth looking into and will save you a few bucks. The others you mention are all good choices. The custom guns because of their tighter specs can have problems if you get dirt, or other foreign material in the receiver area.

I would call American Precision Arms and have them make exactly what U want....it will probably shoot in the "teens," or it will not leave the shop!

Also consider the weight if using it for hunting, some of the rifles may differ by 3-4 pounds. A 308 TRG with 20" barrel makes a pretty decent combo rig. It weighs 10.25 pounds (rifle only) and is pretty handy in the woods. I hiked mine around 30 miles this last elk season in CO and it was very manageable.

I was in your shoes last year and after researching the topic decided on the Tikka Sporter. Tikka is the sister company of Sako from Finland. The action is so smooth and effortless. You have to cycle one to believe it. If you have more conks I would go for a Blaser. If you want an AR get either the JP PSC12 or the Larue PredatOBR.

My vote is for GAP if you want to try and build something to fill both roles. To me AI, Sako, DTA are more geared towards the tactical side of things. All are great rifles though!

Irish is right about the brands he mentioned but also more coins. The Tikka Sporter will be about $1500. The Larue and JP Entertprises are about $3k. All will be less than the more custom rifles mentioned earlier. The Blaser is an amazing versatile rifle system with an eve slicker action !

Most of my rifles are chambered in 308 for outstanding results out of the box half MOA with most ammos the Tikka tactical would be my call!
