I'm debating if I want to get a stock rifle and mod it or start from the ground up. Can anyone give me an approximation of labor costs for a reputable gunsmith to take a 30 cal shilen blank, a virgin 700 receiver, and a recoil lug and thread, cut, chamber, and fit them together?

    ~200 to true action
    ~200 to chamber

Too rich for my blood me thinks.

I guess depending on what "grade" of barrel you get from Shilen, you could save a little bit, but Bartleins can be had for about $350 brand new in just about any flavor you can imagine, and if you dream up something they don't already make, they'll custom make it to whatever spec you want.

Check this group buy out. You don't have to get everything but may be worth it. Good price by a reputable smith.
    http://www.snipershide.com/shooting...2013-remington-m700-accurizing-group-buy.html

Work offered by LRI for the group buy
    Receiver bolt work -125
    Barrel fitting -200
    8-40 scope base- 35
    Bolt fluting- 45
    Tactical bolt knob install- 45
    Thread muzzle- 50
    Thread protector- 30
    Ceracoat barreled action- 125
    Tactical bolt knob- 30
    Heavy tactical recoil lug- 55*
    * will need stock or chassis to be sized for the thicker recoil lug. Give dimension to stock/chassis maker to fit.

The great thing about the group buy is its at its cheapest price bracket. Money saved can get you a nice bartlein barrel.

Alot of good reputable smiths on this site too. Cant go wrong with any as they stand by their work.

Jon Beanland.... check out his website. He has a break down of all the work he'll perform with the associated cost.
