I currently have a savage 110 with accu trigger I picked up cheap a while back ... It's currently chambered in 30-06 and I was thinking about swapping barrels to a 308 ... Would you all swap barrels or just sell the gun and put money with that I was going to use on the barrel and buy a remington sps tactical?

Why would you want to re-chamber? There is not much benefit of .308 over 30-06. However, if you really despise aught six and have to re-chamber, since you already have a long action I would chamber it to another LA. Probably a magnum cartridge.

I'd swap barrels. But I'm confused on your goal of switching to a .308 from an 06?
Same bullets but more power with 06. If i was gonna swap barrels i would want something to take advantage of the long action( seating bullets long and such). And .308 is an outdated round. Maybe swap to a 6.5 4s saum that everybody is glamoring over. But then again. Dont know your intended purpose with said rifle.

Read some reviews on the SPS and LRTs, the SPS will probably need stock work as the barrel touches stock on way to many of them...if you have a suppressor, it's ready for one. The LRTs have had their own problems over the last several years.

Personally I'd look at a Savage TR LE or a 10FCP model.

Kind of depends on what barrel you are going with and who will do the swap. I would weigh the total cost vs purchasing the SPS outright. It is possible to chamber the LA with a 308, but if the cost of doing so is close to a new SPS I would opt for the SPS, this way you have two rifles.

Now if you are going with a premium barrel and good smith, then sure, you already own the receiver and you can try to recoop some money from the -06 barrel.

i was really trying to get away from this pencil thin barrel ... the 06 cartridge don't bother me so much just figured there would be more options on ammo for the 308

Why would anyone want to switch from the 30-06 to the .308?

Because in PLENTY of circumstances, it makes sense.

What if OP doesn't or can't take advantage of the strengths of the .30-06? Then is is is ALL disadvantages.

It'll have more recoil, the ammo would be more expensive to buy, more expensive to reload, barrel wouldn't last as long, ammo would be heavier and (slightly) harder to find.

What if OP lucked out on 10,000 rds of .308 he would like to take advantage of?

OP was asking how he should switch to the .308, not if he should keep is .30-06.

There are few, if any, "inferior" cartridges. There are just some better suited for different tasks.

@ OP, You can always just buy a .308 barrel for your rifle and have the ability to use two cartridges.

Savages are apparently easy to headspace. You can go from .308 to .30-06 or vice versa in an evening.

Barrel swap, if you reload stay with 30-06 if not make the switch. The barrel is where the lion share of accuracy comes from. Simple and relatively cheap for savages.

308 barrels

Op, check savageshooters.com or accurateshooter and you'll find a 308 fat barrel to swap in, and likely it won't take long. lots of guys access a 308 rifle and them sell the barrel for a 6mm or whatever. easy to do with tutorials on the web and you'll be up and running in no time.
