I'm having trouble focusing my eyes while shooting my Arsenal AK with iron sights. When I shoot at 50yds I can put a consistent 1.5" group down on paper, but when I back out to a 100yds, my grouping opens up dramatically. I would just simply blame my eye sight for the issue but when I'm looking at the target 100yds away it is clear and easy to see until I'm looking down the sights and then target becomes fuzzy. I have tried changing targets with little to no change. I also always shoot with both eyes open. Any suggestions?

The target should be fuzzy, the front sight should be sharp.

Is your prior experience different from what is happening now? If so see a Dr to make sure you do not have something wrong like Diabetes.

I always focus on the front sight. If I wasn't I dont think I would be getting groups @ 50yds. Im completely losing where to consistently put the front post. Someone threw out the idea of covering my left eye, would that help?

Covering your off eye helps reduce strain from holding it closed over many shots.

Where you hold on the target depends on what type of target and how you adjusted your sights. For a round bullseye type target, the standard hold is to put the round target on top the front post. Very repeatable.

Trying to put the post in the center of the round black target is not as repeatable

I assume that you are getting older?? I have this problem as well. I asked a bunch of people that basically told me to get over it and accept it.

I didn't want to and did some research. I found this little device and it helped a ton. I preface this by saying all I do is shoot paper (pistol and rifle). If you are a tactical shooter, it may not work. Here is the link…

If you still younger check your eye , sorry I am not eye doctor not much I can said , but happen to alot of folks when starting age good luck sir

The easiest way out of this is to go to aperture type sights.
You can go whole hog on this and spend the price of a really decent scope on a set of sights and find the rear aperture that matches up with your vision and will allow you to focus on the front post. It is similar to the principle that pinhole cameras work on. Problem is fitting one to your gun. Look a bit around the rimfire forums and you might see the type of sight I'm talking about. They are not real good for rapid target acquisition but can be helpful. These are not peep sights, a different animal altogether.

If you are getting old, you may get away with some special shooting glasses with a different prescription and lens center for the strong eye. Basically, you will want the correction in the shooting eye in the top half of the lens, bring a stock to the eye doctor and show him where you will be looking and he can prescribe a lens for you. Not cheap either and don't try to walk down a flight of stairs while wearing these. Have a friend measure the distance from your shooting eye to the front sight post as well so he can understand where you need the focus.

I did this when I had Lasic correction done about 20 years ago. My vision is fading again now, at 71 and I have a cataract developing in my right eye that makes even using a scope less than optimum. You might just want to go with a quality red dot with a 2 MOA dot like I did with my KAC SR-15. Aimpoint Comp M4 ain't cheap either but I can hit clay pidgins stuck onto the 200 yard berm at about 210 yards with it.

The AK isn't exactly a precision rifle either, it wasn't designed for it and most of the ammo is not all that good. If you are 2" or under at 100 yards, I wouldn't feel too bad.

In the ast 4 or 5 years, my vision has gone down like most 50 - something year old ' s do. Started with reading glasses, but still did not have any safety glasses for shooting. I had a custom prescription pair of Titmus safety glasses made, but still right for scoped rifle shooting.

Found a company called "Magnavision." GREAT! Have an ANSI approved frame and main lens with a removable insert that fits behind the main. I use the 1.5 mag insert and it is a whole new world.
