Jogging in Austin, TX

Saying anything even remotely negative against LEO's is just salt in a wound on this site, no matter how deserving it is.......so I'll just keep quite and spectate.

What was she thinking, crossing the street, resisting arrest she can be lucky she didn't get beaten up for such dangerous behavior. Law is for everyone even those crazy liberal, feminists who are stealing god's time jogging instead of cooking and properly caring for their man....

Good thing police caught her early so she still can be reeducated properly.

Amen brother

You forgot to mention breaking one of her feet so that she stays the hell chained to that stove.

No ID Comrade Jay Walking she could have killed somebody. She was sitting there handcuff, resisting arrest, no ID why didn't they Taz her beat her in the knee with a Billy club. To protect and serve. She is young maybe this will teach her a lesion keep your ID on you Comrade this is America.

Pass the Popcorn

Relaxed fitness standards for APD form the look of the first two cops. Couldn't ID the shoulder patches, were they APD or private security?

Id hit it...even while she's crying.

Just another overreach by Police. If she had been a lady of color Jessie would be holding a news conversance and those knuckle draggers would be suspended. I hope she has a law suite against them. Maybe she will get a degree in civil rights and become a lawyer against shit like this.

She probably voted for the current Administration. LOL.

From reading the comments, the police are cracking down on jaywalking across Guadalupe steet (the Drag). There is a big pedestrian crossing (with traffic lights) in front of the university coop, crossing to the west mall. Guadalupe is very heavily trafficked and pedestrians crossing against the light are a hazard to themselves (cell phones and iPods and whatnot while walking), and a terrible burden to the congestion in the area. Jay walking is a minor infraction, and waiting for the light is a terrible waste of several seconds of ones life. And, when completely lost in one's tunes, playing "frogger" with pickups, sedans, and busses is not that big of a deal. Perhaps the police over reacted. Perhaps she is a self centered drama queen. Either way, civilization only works when everyone plays by the rules.

I wrote the above, then looked to see where Big Bite is, and it seems she was crossing 24th street near Guadalupe. 24th was part of my commute when I was attending UT. 4 narrow lanes, no median, no shoulder. It is a death trap, and VERY heavily trafficked. Jaywalking across this street is asking to get hit by a car. The police probably saved her from killing herself.

I know that area well also and your right. A lot of lame brained, half assed ,in a hurry drivers, add to the melee. Its not the Austin of the 60's-70's.

I would like to know how often they enforce this law?
I can understand her thinking she was not doing anything wrong if the law is not enforced on a regular basis, most people might not even know about it.
And please don't give me the old " ignorance of the law is know excuse" routine.
There are so many laws on the books, with more being added all the time, there is know way a person can know them all.

Does it matter how often the laws are enforced? What percentage of people are stopped for traffic violations? It's not a hell of a lot. But, that doesn't stop one from tapping the breaks when they see flashing lights, and you probably don't speed through known speed traps. Those cops didn't run up there to catch her in the act. He'll, I doubt they had time to wipe the powdered sugar off of their fingers (there must be a Krispy Kreme around there close). A little bit of situational awareness would have given here a clue that there were 2 fat cops with nothing to do carrying thick pads of tickets to write. And, the comments section suggested that the crack down has been ongoing. The more I think about it the more I side with her being a self centered drama queen. Not that there are many of those in Austin... ;)

The really sad part is that a healthy young and not unattractive female could have likely resolved the interaction with "yes sir, no sir, I'll follow your advice in the future, etc."

I heard this on a tv show last night and it fits here... "You can't talk your way out of a ticket, but you sure can talk your way into one."

Even a health jogger can't out run two fat cops with radios. Stop, take your lumps, and learn from the experience. The victim card is never a sure bet...

We have a similar situation locally, although the campus is much smaller than UTA, and the roadway is not as heavily traveled. The campus has well-lit crosswalks that the more idiotic students seem to disdain at night, in favor of mindlessly crossing the road in the shadows, and almost always while wearing more black than Johnny Cash at a goth concert. I don't know how many auto-pedestrian and auto-bicyclist/skateboarder hits there are on this stretch, but I would assume that they've happened in the past. The difference here is that the local cops and campus security aren't pouncing on the kids like big cats on the Serengeti, subduing them, and then stuffing them into a police car if they only have their dorm key with them and no ID.

The facts are and the video proof is he run up behind her and grab her by her arm. She jerk her arm back and didn't know it was a LE until she was stopped. He at that time handcuff her for resisting arrest. It is not against the law to be out in public without a ID. She was taken to jail were they fond out people were taping this action and she was not charge for resisting for it was event that she was just setting there with her hands handcuff behind her back like a common criminal. The drama queen part came when they were putting her in the police car to take her to jail. she never raised her voice to them until that point. If it were your sister or wife you would be more than pissed.
There is know doubt relations between LE and the public are being strained because of the bad attitude LE has toward citizens. I hope her parent's are will connected and gets a good civil rights lawyer and sue the shit out of these two LE ASSES. I am sure she will respect LE from now on good work.

When did the video begin? I bet she didn't have anyone taping her jog. That tells me the taping began after the encounter began, or at least after what spawned the encounter. Video is not always the automatic last word.

I lived in Austin for a long time and APD is NOTORIOUS for their corruption. They already have a VERY bad rap within Austin, this is just more fuel on the bon-fire. I really for the life of me cannot figure out why Austin police are so fucked up compared to the rest of the state's/nation's police and why they haven't been able to weed out the bad apples for what has become at least a decade... Every other police dept (save a few LAPD/etc.) seems to fear the public and cops get fired for shit like this, but not in Austin. WTF? Unions?

Yeah.. cus what you didn't see in the video was her spraying down the crowd with an M4, tossing grenades in shop windows, and killing babies... Right? I think it's pretty fucking obvious what she was doing before being arrested...

Here's a hint: Jogging and jaywalking.

Hey, high binder. How's that hunting boycott working out? I know, I know. I'm a traitor, blah, blah, blah.

The video shows her sitting on the ground in cuffs. It does not show how she got there. There is a witness account, from a Daily Texas staffer. If you had ever been subject to that rag, you would understand my skepticism.

The cops probably over reacted. I granted tht in my first post. She, likely acted like a self absorbed cunt. And like I said before, you can't talk yourself out of a ticket, but you can talk yourself into one. Master of one-up-man-ship, she talked herself into a ride to the station.

She was 'beating them' to the DOUGHNUT SHOP!! Both those guys could probably run the 40....in about 40 seconds!!

I could really care less about this girl, but when you have guy's in uniform that out of shape, it's just embarrassing. I'd almost rather they beat her to death with their batons than be that out of shape and in a uniform thats supposed to deserve respect.

Sorry bro, I just couldn't resist (pun intended);)

Fixed it for you ...

So they should get fired for enforcing the laws that the public entrusts them to enforce? As petty as it may be, Jaywalking is still an offense. An offense that was at some point voted into law by the very people of Austin.

Usually Jaywalking is much like a traffic ticket for pedestrians but I guess in this case, the young lady had no ID on her and therefore needed to take a trip to the stationhouse. In order to establish her identity. This isn't something that is uncommon when people don't have any identification. She seems to have escalated the situation by screaming and carrying on. People have this misconieved notion that if they scream and yell or whip out a cell phone camera that we're going to go away.

Oh well, personally I could give two shits where someone crosses the street. If you have your head so far up your ass that you can't be bothered to pay attention and avoid getting hit by a car then perhaps you deserve to be hit by a car.

Is a grammar lesson all you can find fault with in his statement?

The linked videos show her sitting on the ground cuffed. There is commentary about what happened before the video starts, but no "video proof." Not directed at me, but this is where I find fault in the post.

Fat cops and a giant hubbub about jaywalking? Probably a testament to the low crime rate in Austin. Good on them! I don't miss the politics of the area, but I do miss the city...

Probably took a DNA swab and fingerprinted her too. It is my most sincere wish that a drunk driver plows into those cops the next time they're running a traffic stop.

Edit: May have to say some prayers toward that end.

That's fucking LOW. Get a grip.

Hold on, VeerG. Imagine how much productivity would improve in all fields if the reward for doing your job (especially the parts that are boring or seem trivial) was crippling injury or death. I think he may be on to something. I wonder what it is that Brasscow does for a living...

It's kinda working but no thanks to cock-sucking traitors like you. :) Game tag sales were down considerably this year so maybe you'll get your tag and if you do let me know I'll be the first to "welcome" you...

I don't think you need 20 mins of video before you see her in cuffs to ascertain that she was hardly doing anything to warrant what we see in the video. I tend to believe the accounts that she probably jaywalked and a cop went after her to give her a ticket, he no doubt grabbed her because she couldn't hear him (ear phones) and she instinctively struggled to get away like anyone would do if grabbed from behind. This triggered his "Respect mai authorita" and they proceeded to add her to the ranks of cop haters.

Bottom line: yeah she fucked up (jay-walking) but the cops over-reacted as they always do in Austin.

There was no call for this heavy handed treatment.
None at all.
There has to be a better use for law enforcement.
I love the police but I don't trust them.

I agree. We both know it's a stupid fucking law but it's a law none-the-less and people who vote for it (like I'm sure this girl would vote for it) deserve to be under those laws but there needs to be a measured response that is proportionate to the offense (and this could be the case here but being Austin, I doubt it). The last thing cities known for their corrupt cops need is fat-ass power-tripping cops like these two. Yeah, maybe you're right though if the law says she has to have her "papers" on her at all times then she might be due to trip in the paddy-wagon, if that's the case it's just a sad commentary on the the U.S. as a whole. The witness accounts really do make it sound as if the cops delivered an disproportionate response though and I'd believe a witness long before any APD. I'm sure the truth will come out in her lawsuit though and the taxpayers of Austin will make a millionaire out of this girl.

Woman Violently Arrested For Jaywalking (VIDEO) | The Libertarian Republic
Please excuse my 4th grade education but Judge from Fox news is looking in on this miscarriage of justice. And for you people that call her a drama queen and a self absorbed cunt you don't even know her or were ether there or know what happen. I grew up in a children home don't have a good education but I made it and God has blessed me. I wish slapcolp, hlee,Verr_G would do this to my sister I have the money to collect your badges that is given to you by the citizens that your work for .You don't work for the police department you work for the law abiding people of America. It is our right to make sure you are doing your job correct. One or two of you sound like your burnout maybe you should retire to were you can wave that retirement check stub in the face of people like me that pay a shit load of taxes to keep people like you on the streets.

Riiiighhhtt... So let me get this straight. I jokingly bust your balls cause your post was difficult to read. I then go on to try to explain why perhaps you saw what you did in the video clip all the while saying that I believe that jaywalking is a useless law. And from all that you deduce that I'm burned out and should retire but first you have monies so you want my badge? Okay lol... I think.

Welcome to a taste of what happens when "liberals" take over a city....
And of course the police chief going on about how he would have made up even more things to charge her with if he could have.... if only it weren't for those pesky cameras...

According to the witness that posted the video there was a steady stream of pedestrians getting tickets. And, according to the comments accompanying the video, this crackdown on jaywalking has been ongoing for some time. 24th street gets very heavy foot traffic due to the proximity of a lot of student housing just west of the campus. Given those 3 data points, how is it that this is the only case of "police overreach" to come to light? Surely there has been a steady stream of pompous frat guys body checked and taken down town. Nope. For as long as this has been going on (and admittedly, I don't know how long this has been going on) we only have the one incident. I maintain that there is more to the story and that there are not many things that you can do to make a police encounter more enjoyable, but there are myriad things that you can do to make them worse.

Here's my badge. Take it...

This story just keeps getting more entertaining...

"Police chief forced to apologize over comments saying that at least jogger didn't have to deal with police who sexually assaulted her
Police chief Art Acevedo was issued an apology today over statements he made in a press conference yesterday
Acevedo yesterday defended police behavior in the arrest of jogger Amanda Jo Stephen
He said the police are sexually assaulting people in other cities 'so I thank God that this is what passes for a controversy in Austin'" - daily mail

You forgot to add that I magically acquired a badge and a state commission out of his tirade.

Deputy Singh? Heh heh, that rings!

It is interesting to me how law enforcement support each other no matter how poor their behavior, all the while telling us they are just doing their job and enforcing the laws. They pick and choose which laws to enforce, and when they want to enforce them.
They also reciprocate professional favors to each other, such as not giving each other speeding tickets, where you or I are going to get that ticket.
I live near a town where the crime rate on the north end is like little Chicago, and the police don't go there or get out of their vehicles. Yet, they always find the time to continually set up speed traps in the effluent neighborhoods to harass the people that are going to work with speeding tickets, in order to generate revenue.
The PR of the police department in my area is poor because of behavior like this.
It would seem the PR of Austin LE is not going to much better.

Yeah but if you post something like this you're instantly a "cop hater", "nut", "rightwing" etc... At the same time same people will preach how they protect and how they will stand for 2ndA or other rights. Check out Missouri thread where it appears LE was against changes to constitution of state which were pro 2ndA. LE all over the world is exactly the same, same type of personality gravitates to this profession and politicians know that and exploit it.

Yet, they always find the time to continually set up speed traps in the effluent neighborhoods

There is a big difference between effluent and affluent .... just saying

I don't know if I'd want to be setting up speed traps in effluent neighborhoods. Those folks eat way too much fiber and the traps back up too damned fast.

Interesting when you can't respond to the comment or argument with a pertinent rebuttal, that the argument is side tracked with comments about incorrect spelling or grammar, or some type of lame attempt at a joke.
