I'm currently looking into long range factory .308 bullets, and I'm specifically interested in the hornady 178 grain round.

What type of bullets do you use out of a 20" or greater length barrel? I'm planning to use it in my future AI AXMC, and I really don't know that many precision/long range .308 factory bullets.

To answer your question about what others use, I'm running 175g SMK BTHP. Based on the volume I shoot, I started reloading a couple of months after getting started. I'm no expert, but you should do well with 175-178's if you're shooting past 900 yards. I couldn't keep 168's supersonic to 1K. 175's did the trick.

Have fun!

155 lapua scenars work great for me of course they have a 175

Oh god, they're very expensive though. I think the minimum I'd spend out of a precision rifle is $1 per shot, maximum $2. I should actually start looking into hand loading.

+1 on that. Some of the guys I shoot alongside have great things to say about the 155 Scenars over about 46 grains of Varget.

ummm this is a projectile not a full round ready to shoot . you asked the question wrong if you are not already handloading that how people and myself are answering the question as if you hand load

I asked for long range factory rounds. Maybe I did ask the question wrong, and thanks for the clarification. I'm actually starting to look into hand loading right now, and going to look to factory rounds when I first get the gun to find out what type of bullet it likes.

Eh, it was just something I came up in about 2 seconds, I've got about 50 comments on how retarded my screen-name is, I understand.

And thanks for the tips, great help.

Yeah seriously my build is running me about $12k~. Maybe the cheap side of me is showing up with bullets. Thanks for the help!

12k for your "build" and you don't know the difference between rounds and bullets Mr. Sniper?
Well, FWIW, my "build" likes HSM factory rounds loaded with 178gr A-max bullets out of a 24" barrel pretty well. YMMV.

178 BTHP out of my 20" .308 is going about 2700fps pushed by Varget. Very accurate.

$12K for a .308 build? What the hell are you building?

OP, I'm new to this too and wanted to get some factory ammo before I start reloading. I'm sticking with the 175 smk. So far I've got 2 boxes(bags) of m118, 2 boxes buffalo bore, & 4 boxes Hsm. We'll see what my new rifle likes :) I'd like to get some fgmm or black hills to try, but can't find any. Good luck

I shoot the Hornady 178gr Superformance Match ammo out of my 308 with a 18" barrel at a 1,000 yard benchrest match (it's my only rifle that I can shoot in the lite gun class) with very good results. Of course it never wins, but always puts head turning groups on paper for a barrel that short shooting factory ammo. I can say I've been extremely pleased, I only wish I'd purchased a truckload of it when it could be found.......oh the good ol' days.
