So, i'm new to the world of precision shooting, and would like to start doing data collection... My question is i guess, what all do i record? do the books you buy have all the stuff you need to fill out already in there? is it easy enough to kind of figure out without too much help? sorry guys, i know this sounds basic but I was searching the site for a good 20-30 minutes and can not find very much info on the subject. If you could point me out a thread or just plain answer, I'd be quite grateful.

Thanks guys!

Its not a simple question. I record different things depending upon what data I'm out to collect and what rifle/sights I'm shooting. Often I record nothing at all. Too many variables.

Just get a small notebook and write info in it when you shoot. Conditions, elevations, windage, velocity if youre shooting through a chrono. IMO No need for some big fancy book for each caliber or rifle that you won't remember to bring with you unless youre shooting high power or something

Date time weather conditions ammo specs rifle caliber distance wind speed and direction group size rounds fired just to name a few

thanks. this is exactly what I was looking for. this stuff is all new to me. I'm the first one in my family since grandpa to even pick up a gun so i've had to learn alot of stuff the hard way.

Don't worry I'm a noob too..... Idk if my answer is helpful or hurtful but this is what I do.

Log your location date time of day temp elevation needed to reach the smallest target at a known range from 100 to 600 closer or farther based on your available range ammunition ect. Powder and bullet used brand and weight used.

I will usually get my 100 yard zero throw a couple more on it and move further out after I get a hit throw a couple more to confirm then further out then a couple more then walk it back in or jump around according to your dope collected.
