Got this in an email and I figured I would share with you guys. If you have an attached garage, they can gain entry into the house as well.

Breaking into a garage in six seconds

The six second fix that would prevent this.

My doors don't have windows, but I would think that would only add about 6 more seconds.

Quote "we're not gonna show you how to do it". Freakin media. I wonder how many shitbirds just got an idea. Gonna have to zip tie mine now. Thanks Slap..... Kinda

Good info - will be sending to my folks. Annoying how much we have to try and safeguard our stuff. I like to imagine a world where I could leave my doors unlocked and stuff in plain view all the time and not worry. Imagine how much time, money, and effort I could put towards other things. Thieves are a perpetual drain on everyone, including themselves.

Wow, Ive been looking for a new trade....thanks for the instructional video. Im on my way and I owe it all to Slapchop.

I took my cord off when I first moved in for this exact reason (I was raised in Albuquerque so I know a lot of the tricks from being a victim over and over) but I never thought it through to that level. I'll be adding a zip tie to mine before I leave the house today. I always padlock my door from the inside when I leave for a trip but this mod will be great for daily errands and the like.

Thanks for the link Slap. We all have a lot of $$$$$$$$$$ shit in our houses and everything helps.

Glad to help Binder. Most of us keep some very expensive toys in the garage. Seeing this, all it takes is a hanger, a van and a few minutes and you're wiped out.

Thieves don't need YouTube to figure this stuff out; the rest of us do. I'm glad that it was posted.

My point is the newscaster said "We're not gonna show you how to break in" immediately after they aired a video showing how. Then the co-anchor tells the viewers to use a coat hanger. Face palm.

As for thieves being able to figure things out on their own, I believe you give most of them way too much credit.

And Slap, my sarcastic "Thanks....kinda" was my attempt at inebriated humor lol. Seriously appreciate the info.

Matt

Just run a master lock through one of the holes in the rail that guides the runners and it blocks the door from opening until you remove the lock and then have an alarm for the house. If you don't have a hole one or two inches above any of the rollers, take out a drill and make one. I have more than one garage and I don't use one for cars so a lock works well.

I did mine a few hours ago. I had to drill the carrier but I feel a lot better now:

run a hot wire across the top in the gap. try to break in and zap just like Wiley coyotey i will be purchasing the ACME garage security kit

Also live in Albuquerque and it's not these kinda guys ya need to worry about! It's the strong armed guy that bust your door in a 6 AM that ties you up and the rest of the Family as well and takes all your weapons and steals your vehicle and never get caught! Happened a couple neighborhood's over from me and nobody ever got caught! Sine I do not work I keep a Mini 30 next to my bed with numerous 20 round mags :) also open carry a 44 around the house so I do fear people but not many :)

Same / same - saw this last week. Locking mechanism is the bar - slide the hanger through the gap….access the building.

The thieves would have a big surprise at my house. My exterior garage door has an alarm sensor and will set the alarm off like any of the other doors and windows hooked up to the alarm system. Even so I will do the zip tie trick as well. Every little bit helps. Thanks for posting this.

I used to work for a garage door company and I would tell customers about this all time and even demonstrated it a few times to show them how easy it was. I saw someone had mentioned passing a lock through the track to keep the door from opening, while that will work use extra caution if you have a garage door opener. If you try to open the door with the lock in place it will damage a door pretty good and lead to some pretty expensive repairs. Same goes if your doors have slide locks, snap locks, or lock bars like some older doors have.

Done. Then showed this trick to my neighbor. Thanks for the tip. As a retired cop, I've seen a lot of home burglaries where access was gained that way.

It is a good preventative measure for sure, I'm always amazed at how little people do to beef up their security. However, I will say I have yet to run into an incident of this where I work. The most common garage burglaries are either the unsecured garage that someone forgot to close or they regularly leave open when not attended. Also see a lot of the vehicle burglaries in front of the home where the thief swipes the garage door opener out of the vehicle and comes back later or they hit it at that same time.

Keep your garage door shut, don't leave garage door openers in your vehicle or in commonly located areas, and definitely perform SlapChop's easy modification.

That won't work with mine. I fixed it as soon as I moved in. If they gain entry into the garage, they can come into the house because Bulleit will be waiting for them. If I need to get in, I just hit the code. Only other way is to borrow a neighbors ladder and go in through the upstairs bedroom window...where Bulleit will be waiting

^^ Reminded me of a news cast I saw a while back:

With a little common sense, dogs are easily defeated. They shouldn't be ones sole means of home security.

Thanks for the tip. I feel better knowing that our "to the house" door in the garage has a deadbolt and is always locked, but I will still zip tie the mechanism to protect my items in the garage. I never realized this was a concern...

Once in your garage they could simply close the garage door and proceed to make a shit ton of noise and would probably use your own tools (power tools even) to bypass that dead-bolted door. I've seen break ins just like this where the robber used the home owner's circular saw to by-pass the lock on the inside door by cutting a < around the deadbolt and door knob. It's far better to keep them out in the first place.

yup, Just got fucked last night. I saw this thread and wrote it off. They used my furniture dolly to load up my shit and rolled it down the street and to their vehicle. Thing is I am a very light sleeper and did not hear nothing. FUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKK................FUcK fuck Fuckkkkkkkkkkkk fucking fuck.....

I wish they would pass a law here similar to the stand your ground law that would allow the use of lethal force against thieves. Only good thief, is a dead one.

For real? Sorry man, I'm pissed for you. Where you in the house asleep? Details!

I just got a new mig welder and have been working in the garage the last couple weeks. I live in a cul-de-sac so dont get too much traffic. All the neighbors are cool, but one is a fuckin shit bag and he has shitbag guest over all the time. I think they cased my house as I used to leave the garage door open and drive to the local Home Depot. Plus anyone who has ever ran a chop saw, knows how loud they are. I even thought about the fact that the welder could be seen from the street.

I stay up late and do a quick check at night before I go to bed, so they had to wait the lights went out.
I am a light sleeper and have both a 12g and x39 by the bed, but I did not hear anything.

Wife got up in the morning and found all of her doors open in her car. She could not open the garage door with the remote cuz the emergency thing was opened. I looked in my jeep and a few things were missing(ipod and garmin), but then noticed my welder/new 80cf tank were gone. looked at my shelf were I keep my work gear, all of my test equipment gone (oscope, radiation meter, etc). I found my furniture dolly halfway down the block. The Officer that came said my development and the one across the street have had a rash of car break-ins the last couple of weeks. I am the first garage/home.

So, to all out there, this is a real threat. I became complacent because in the 11 years I lived up here in Northern CO I have never had any issue.

When I was stationed in Cali, sure, gangland/crackhead bullshit. I was always Vigilant. Let my guard down. Wont happen twice though

I drilled a hole and put the wire tie tonight. I did test it and it does snap if I pull hard enough, so I am not worried about egress.

I know the test equipment will show up, It is very specific to xray testing so no Joe-Blo should have one. Only a repair guy or a Radiation Physicist.

Holy shit! That sucks man, I'm sorry.

Did they get access to your garage via this method or maybe a remote in an outside car or something?

Hope your stuff turns up and isn't just dumped in a local river when they figure out they can't pawn it.

Zip ties going in!
When I am away for extended period of time, I just use a C-Clamp in the track of each garage door.
AND, as pointed out, if you forget and hit the opener, you are in for a lot of damage. So, I just put a piece of blue painters tape over the interior switch.

Yes, they pulled the cord thing down. Mine is a t handle one.

When they got in, they reached up and tuned off the power strip/surge protector my garage opener is plugged into. I can only think, was to disable the automatic lights in the door opener.

I am going to install a keyed light switch and one of those 15W(75w equiv) led over head lights and keep that bitch on forever. They last 27 years at 3 hours a day, but if it last two or three years so be it.

Man its a pretty ballsy move in Northern Colorado, as we have the "make my day" law, lethal force for a threat on person, physical force to protect property, Here is a snipit from the Moffat county Sheriff website

http://www.moffatcountysheriff.com/CoStatutes.pdf

The c clamp is a good idea, if you go on an extended trip, then turn off power to the opener. This will remind you to take the clamp out.

Damn dude, sorry to hear this. One can only hope that the fuckers that did this get hit by a slow moving train.

Exactly, when I first read this thread I never thought it could happen up here, thats why I did not wire tie the cord. Shit there were only 9 burglaries in my town in 2013(the entire year), but plenty of stuff taken from cars. There was no forced entry otherwise, the side door was intact. They did not use a remote because the motor vibrates the entire floor. Either they did the whole hanger thing or were hiding out in my Jeep (even creepier thought).

Roggom, your story made me zip tie my garage door as soon as I got home. I hope they get the guys that stole your stuff.

security is all relative....

If you walk with confidence up to a door, pull your cordless sawzall or circular saw out and make a few cuts, no one notices....

Smarter to be the small percentage of people who always use an alarm...

What are the odds that Slap would post this and only a day or so later you get hit via this exact method.

Tweakers... I'd be VERY suspect of your neighbor/s-friends.

Definitely the shit bag neighbor or their associates... I'd be shocked if it wasn't.
