I'm tagging in. I'm looking to get another Desert Tech, this time in the Covert. I want to run only 16'' and 18'' conversions and cant decide which caliber to run for my hunting setup...

Have had this 308 for a while but being too busy ramping up for some matches and adventure races I just got it out today. I will eventually put up a full range report but I'm so happy with how it shot I couldn't wait (and it's about time someone got this thread going again). Only 30 rounds through it and out of the gate it shoots nice little 5 shot clover leafs at 100 yards with 178 AMax's, 42.0 IMR 4064, Lapua brass, FGMM 210m, at 2.230 to ogive. No chrono data yet. It has an 18" Rock Creek #4, Dead Air Sandman S, and is built by Accurate Ordnance with one of their branded Stiller's. I don't know what the color is called as they just mixed some Cerakote to match the stock. I chose the Swaro Z6 as this rifle is built for hogs and deer in some pretty tight woods. I wasn't able to find a better lightweight scope for this kind of up close shooting in heavy timber. Glass is just fantastic. I have a 16in barrelled 375WSM, Its pretty "plain jane" but its a great deer rifle.( apologies for the poor quality of the pictures)
375WSM, that is a serious thumper calibre, what deer are you using them on?
Here's my first build chambering my own barrel and everything from start to finish. 18" 22-250, shooting 65gr GameKing. K&P barrel, jewell and krg. Tried my hand at hydrodipping, won't do it again. also made my own spigot mount type of thing for my harris bipod, turned out ok but not near as nice and the one you can buy.

I really dig this thread, right up my alley. Here are mine... top is a 16.1" RARRC in .300 Blackout with 12" LOP (with a hard plastic butt plate I made myself), tuned trigger, Talley lightweight ringmounts, Leupold 2-7x Ultralight, Hornady Bolt Ball, and a basic web sling. It weighs 6.6lbs as pictured with 5 rounds in it and is just shy of 33" OAL so it makes for a great woods gun and < 300 yard brush hunting rifle. Bottom is a 16.5" SPS Tactical .308 budget precision / hunting hybrid build with Magpul stock, bottom metal, cheek riser, bipod mount, & sling, hand-me-down Burris glass from another rifle, DNZ one-piece mount, and a crappy trigger and brake that will both soon be replaced.

Man, that looks great for what you describe as your first attempt. Out of curiousity, why did you engineer a spigot mount vs just mounting a pic rail on the KRG?
Reds / fallow deer and pigs but hopefully one day wapati (elk if you prefer) and maybe take it to Canada or Alaska for a hunt (its my favorite at the moment)
My 9.3 makes fallow backflip so I can only imagine the effect that's going to have!

What velocity are you throwing them out at? And what weight projectile?
Currently using 250gn Barnes TTSX @ 2600fps. Like a big .308 really
I really like it and the bonus is less damaged meat to deal with unlike my 6.5SAUM which wrecks the whole front end if you shoot them in the shoulder
That's the reason I went to 9.3. Better meat recovery. Those TTSXs are gold, I've ordered some for mine in 250gr as well, not getting pushed as fast but I'm not shooting anything beyond 100m, can't see that far.
My Harris was for a regular mount on a stock and with the stud mount, it would twist since the friend is flat. I didn't want to have to buy the Harris adapter to mount on a pic rail and wanted to mount to the solid aluminum instead of the polymer on the krg. Also moved it forward a few inches and closer to the barrel centerline so it was kind of a win win win situation for me.

That actually makes great sense, and sounds like a solid solution. I wasn't even thinking of the KRG being polymer. XLR has me kind of spoiled on chassis' and I've been lazy really paying attention to some of the other popular options. As I said, your setup looks great.

Thanks SpookM14, that rifle started life as a school rifle at the GPS Defense Sniper School (formerly the McMillan Sniper School). GPS was well ahead of the curve on advocating shorter barrels on precision rifles back when it was borderline heresy in some circles. To tell you how "long ago" it was, that mismatched SFP Mk4 was the scope they mounted on the school rifles.
I bought it in its original school configuration (including the scope) in the top-loading Rem stock and sent it back to the original rifle builder, JD Thomas up in Yakima,WA to go back through it, thread the barrel, bed it into that T4, add the CDI bottom metal, etc. Two days after receiving it from JD I took it to a course and was making 1st round hits on LaRue and Accuracy 1st steel targets out to 900 or so, with 2nd/3rd round hits to 1100ish with that sawed off factory 1:12 barrel.
Despite having several "better" rifles now, I'll probably always hold onto that one. It got me addicted to LR shooting, and was the impetus for me to finally become active on the Hide after lurking for years prior. It's also probably responsible for my continuing preference for shorter than normal barrel lengths on my precision rifles.

What bullet weights are you able to stabilize in that 1 in 12?
175gr Black Hills. IIRC, on paper I was transonic in the mid 900yd range, but at 1100 or so my misses were so close that I have no way of saying if it was bullet instability or simply wind.
Just when I think I have all the rifles I want I see this...Nice looking rigs, I can see one of these in my future.
i'm 99% positive my next chassis will be the XLR for my 28 nosler. not that I don't like the KRG, but I want to try something different. and, I can get into a folder a lot cheaper than the whiskey 3 chassis.
I'll say that owning rifles in both "conventional" stocks and XLR chassis (plural), unless I have a specific need otherwise I look at new projects in terms of putting them into an XLR. I havent found a down side to the "tube" chassis, and with what it saves on fitting/bedding/floating, etc. it's worth every penny, especially with the deals on used XLRs in the PX. On top of that, their customer service has been incredible. I'm hoping they're still around the forum, or will return shortly, because they used to be very active on the old Hide.
I guess I'll be that guy then.
