So, most of you guys don't know me yet. But I'm getting a new Remington 700 XCR in .308. Some thieves were nice enough to lift my old heavy barrel, and I've chosen the XCR to replace the old girl. The new outfit will be like the old one, Leupold M4 MK 6.5-20x50mm LR/T scope, Harris bipod, etc. My question is about a muzzle brake. There are several to chose from, and manufactures also. I'd like to hear from some of you that may own specifically the XCR in .308, or a comparable rifle in .308 and what muzzle brake you prefer/have shot/etc.

Re: My New Remington XCR

Ray Gun I have a buddy on here OAM that turned me on to shooting distance a year ago. I didn't have the money to sink into a custom build, so we decide to go with the remington xcr tactical. Mounted 20 moa rail, titanium firing pin, went with lupy mark4 4.5-14 lit reticle lapua brass and lapua 155 scenars. Alot of people on here don't like the lupy scopes but I have about 800 rounds down the tube on this with lots of clicking up and down always returns to zero. As for the gun couldn't be happier. Shoots like a house of fire. But then again Ive owned a custom rifle. You shouldn't be disappointed. Does not have a muzzle brake though.

I like my brake from Score High. Works well. Good shooting with the new stick...

Yes, sir. Badger M5. I really like it. Highly recommend it.

Re: My New Remington XCR

I was just looking at that rig. Looks great. I'm looking heavily at the Ops Inc. brake now.

I didn't see if the magazines came in a higher cap. Changing 5 at a time still is faster than loading one at a time into the internal mag.

What did you give for it? Buy it from Badger or ?

Re: My New Remington XCR

Ray Gun,
Badger has a 5rd mag and a 10rd mag. Which is all I've ever needed. I have 2-5rd mags and a 10rd mag. Works good.

If you need a Badger get one from Triad Tactical. Great prices and speedy fast service.

I'll have to check out that Ops Inc. brake. I have another build in the works, who knows.

My XCR is pretty much a factory gun with stuff I've stuck on it. It's very accurate and fun to shoot. A very good factory gun!

Re: My New Remington XCR

Yeah, I wouldn't look to carry ten of them. But in a pinch not having to change them too often would be great. Like I said, either way it's better than one at a time back to five.

I like the design of the Ops Inc. brake so far. They claim almost no dust signature. Which I suppose most would claim.

Re: My New Remington XCR

What about an adjustable cheek piece? Like the Kydex unit?

Re: My New Remington XCR

Ok. The Kydex and DWProducts units look the same. And the price is similar. So it sounds like you guys are happy enough with the installed result of either.

Re: My New Remington XCR

No apology needed. I haven't either. I've always owned "factory" guns that I then modified as moolah allowed.

Re: My New Remington XCR

Don't let anybody give you any shit just like you said a few mods on that xcr quality scope rail rings and good lapua ammo and proper break in that thing is going to shoot crazy. Oh I forgot jewell trigger. Good luck and enjoy!!!!!!

Re: My New Remington XCR

Yep, all of the above. I used to catch hell about my Ruger M77V in 308. But with the proper parts, and I left the wood stock on it, I was hanging with my buddies out to 600-700 yards with it. You just have to learn the rifle. There's a reason U.S. Snipers were dropping Germans in two wars with 1903A4's and M1-D's (E7/E8 also). The rifle is only part of the equation. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir though.

Re: My New Remington XCR

You hit the nail right on the head. Learn how to shoot the stuff you got and do it well!!! Wear it out then move on. Eventually when a guy can afford it get the top line. I know of some guys starting out with top notch shit that just cant shoot. Sit down and just get tons of trigger time and learn the art. Amen Brotha

Re: My New Remington XCR

So, I'm switching gears a bit. I'm getting a Remmy 700 XCR, but the LRT model. I think it will better suit my specification for shooting, and where I'd like my skill level to go. I'm not able to shoot as much as I used to, so a custom rifle just doesn't make money sense for me. My Leupold Mk. 4 came today, so it's Christmas early!

I'm reading on here, and the Leupolds don't seem to have the fan base (as it were) that they used to. Why is that?

Re: My New Remington XCR

The reason is there are better scopes with matching reticle/turrets out there.

Re: My New Remington XCR

Such as? I've been out of this for a bit, and am just getting back into it.

Re: My New Remington XCR

Better is in the eyes of the beholder I guess but depending on options, magnification, and such you'll usually hear people state Nightforce and USO to start. Look around and you will get the picture. I've had Leupolds and I liked them but as I stated they don't match. Is it really a big deal, no.

I have an XCR LRT in 308. I only put about 200 rounds through it....cleaned it up and then put him into storage. It shot very very well and most owners of this rifle will echo that sentiment. You won't be dissapointed.....I was able to consistently get 1/2-1/3" groups at 100 and sub-10" groups at 1000. To me that's not bad for a factory Remington rifle. I was getting some really good velocities out of that 26" oem barrel too.

I have a couple of custom built rifles that use proprietary quick detach brakes. One of them is also chambered in 308 Win. The brake effectively cuts the recoil down by probably 25-35%. The best part is that I can spot my own impacts at short distances. The rifle doesn't move off my target after I take a shot.

Re: My New Remington XCR

Thanks for the input armorman! Hopefully pick mine up in a week or two.

Re: My New Remington XCR

Well, my rifle finally showed up at the gun shop. The "deal" the guy was cutting me as a personal favor to a mutual friend of ours turned out to be what he charged anyone that stepped into the shop. But the price was only around $50 higher than the lowest internet price I found. And with no shipping, I didn't make a stink.

It's at the armorers now getting the scope fitted and bore sighted. Then it's off to get the barrel threaded and a cap made for use with a muzzle brake.

I should be breaking in the barrel within the next two months. Work and the schedule for the armorer are keeping me from the range. But, the weather will be warmer then (not that it matters), and that will make it more like Spring to get to the range after single digit temps lately.

Re: My New Remington XCR

I took my XCR out last week and I love it! It's my first bolt gun so I'm a little clueless, but I'm learning. It seems to be very accurate and I really like the hook on the stock. I was also very impressed with how little the recoil was for a .308! The only thing I may need is a riser for my cheek so I can get in a more comfortable position.

Re: My New Remington XCR

Hey Ray, did you end up getting that adjustable cheek rest? I still need one and cant choose which one will work the best...

Re: My New Remington XCR

I just ordered the Karsten cheek rest for my XCR also. I was wondering where I need to drill on the XCR LR stock so I don't hit the aluminum block... I'm asuming I'm not supposed to drill through the aluminum right?

Yes. It's awesome. I had to trim it to get it in the position I wanted, and still be able to remove the bolt for cleaning without moving the cheek rest. Not much, about 1/8" And it's not that I mounted it wrong or too close. The shape wasn't right along with the height. It ended up falling right smack in the middle of the bolt.

Very easy to install. I also installed the optional rubber cushion piece they give you. It's stiff, but easier on the cheek bone if you've not got a lot of flesh in that area.

I'm also upgrading to Roedale base, rings and ERA-TAC Angle Cosine Indicator Mount/Set. Their stuff is awesome, and well packaged.

Re: My New Remington XCR

BTW, drilling didn't come anywhere near any aluminum. Easy as hell install!

Just a note, if you have to have it raised pretty high it will get in the way of the cleaning rod. I have to move it every time I clean the barrel. Not that I care since I bought the one with the knobs...
