Does anyone know if you can still get your hands on the MIRS rail? Looking to buy one in the future for a 300 WM build.
 
Trying to build a MK13 clone?
No, I am looking to build a rifle very similar to the McMillan Tac 338 Chris Kyle carried during his time in the military. I will be using a Remington 700 action in place of the Mcmillan action and I want to chamber it in 300 WM instead of the more expensive 338.

Does anyone know if the MIRS is covered by the ITAR export regulations? The reason I'm asking is because I live in Norway and I'm trying to gather up the parts for a Mark 13 build (or as close as I can get with certain items being restricted :( )
 
I have a MIRS at home that I was going to use but could part with instead. It is in decent shape but is definitely used. It was already off the rifle before I acquired it though so I couldn't tell you if it was off a M-24 or a Mk 13.

I'll try to take a look at it when I get home but none of our rifles were SA so it should be a LA.
 
Mine is off a mk13 return stock, used, and painted in a desert look.
It is not a RevB so it does not have 20 moa built in .

If I keep it I may put it on my m24 return.

First, make sure that every bolt seats the rail in place. This is extra important for the front mounting bolt as it bottoms out in the barrel thread if its too long. If it does, it needs to be shortened. After you have made sure that every bolt fits right, apply locktite and torque it down. No idea on an acctual torque value though.

Someone can tell me torque value? And. I see MIRS has 5 screws.. But rem action has 4 screw hole...what is purpose of this 5th screw??

I have a MARS rail but the principle is the same. Could the fifth bolt be instead of the rollpin in the MARS rail that acts as a recoil lug?
 
For MIRS owners: what torque did u use to mount it to the action?
I followed my gunsmith's advice and i tightened to 30 inch/lbs (screws 8-40)
According to him, ergal is more badass than many poor steel , and 30 inch-lbs are not exaggerated, even considering rifle is a 338 lm.

The mounting screw torque value will not be as important as making sure the angled jack screw is tightened SECURELY against the inside of the ejection port.

The MIRS have history of coming loose with rifles that are actually being used.
Many will have no issues at all but when/if they start being used regularly with NV in place, things can go to crap quickly. Heavy day optics and/or the addition of NV increase the mass that the rifle is trying to run out from under with every shot. I have seen MANY shearing screws and having issues.

McCann used to be less than helpful and downright arrogant when asked to assist with a fix.

The only way I accept jobs that specify that mount (there are many better ways to get solid NV setups) is when I am allowed to add multiple locator pins through the MIRS and into the receiver. The angled jack screw cannot be counted on to keep shear forces off of the 4 mounting screws. ......and No.....using the larger 8-40 mounting screw option does not guarantee a drama free usage.

I just wanted to throw this in for you to proceed carefully and try to preempt any future issues if you plan on actually using the setup as intended rather than a show piece.

This was the most recent (and hopefully last) group of SENTINEL rifles spec'd for the MIRS a couple of years ago. These all had hardened and ground steel dowel pins going through the mount and into the top of the receivers which insured that the mounting screws would never take the shear loads from recoil.

I also have a MIRS rail, Long action, its the 0 MOA version. pm me if anyone is interested in this. Im needing a short action MIRS rail, 20moa.
 
Anyone have any idea which model would go on to McMillan tac 50 A1? Or any other night vision compatible rail mounts ?
