Extended Long Range shooters,

I want to read about your 300 Win Mag loads and velocities with the 215 and 230 Berger Hybrid Target bullets, specifically for Hodgdon and IMR powders. I am only interested in Hodgdon and IMR powders as they are the only ones I have access to.

Just purchased a Rem 700 Sendero SFII, 300 WinMag with a 26" tube and a 1:10 twist. Dropped it in an MDT ESS chassis, installed a brake and want to take it out for some 1000m to 2000m extended long range shooting. I am hoping my rifle will stabilize the 230 Hybrid although I am aware that 1:9 is better suited for those 230s.

I fully understand that if you post your exact loads, I will work my way up to them for safety reasons.

H1000 seems to be the go to. I just started with 7977 and the 208 a max. I used 4831SC for a long time. I never got eye ball popping velocity with the 4831SC, but it was very consistent. I have half a box of so of 230s to try out, but I have never got around to it. I had pretty good luck with the 210VLD and 4831SC too. I was shooting at 2700 with the 208 a max. I think ut was about 2750 with the 210 VLD, and 3000 with the 200ELD.

Good info. If I remember right, 4831sc was suggested for the lighter bullets but not recommended for the heavier ones. It was apparently a bit too fast of a burn for the heavies...but as I said, that’s what I read and not personal experience.

Its kind of like RL15 with 140s in the 6.5 creedmoor, it works fine, but you can get more velocity with something little slower.

Are you set on the 215/230?

I was shooting the 200.20x bullets in a 24” 1:10

I did minimal load development and this is what I ended up using for the NF ELR

Probably should have tweaked it a bit more but I didn’t have time. Made 2 consecutive hits at the 2nd furthest target 1800ish irrc so it was decent enough.

I’m not dead set on the 215/230 because if they don’t work in my barrel, I will have to look at other options. Thx for the info.

I'd look at H1000 and 225 ELDs. I had no issue with stability in 1-10 twist with this combo out to a mile, 3-10 hits with a lot of wind and mirage accounting for the misses.

I don't have access to ELR, but I shoot 210SMKs, 215 Berger Hybrids and 230 Berger OTMs (the 230 hybrids were to long to mag load in an a191 chamber). My go to is Retumbo. I couldn't get H1000 to shoot with heavy bullets, my barrel just didn't like it. I can push the 230OTMS to edit:2800fps and get 6 firing on Winchester brass (FL sized and co-headspaced) before they get too sticky. The 230OTMS and the 215BHs shoot almost identical to 1250 yards.

The 210SMK shows real promise, but they are so expensive I don't know they are worth the expense over the 230s.

I'll ad the 225 ELDs to my list if all else fails. thx.

Hornady 212eldx is a very close and economical 2nd choice to the 215 berger. I have had good luck with 76-77gr h1000 pushing both these bullets at 2850fps out of 10 twist 22 inch ar rifles.
But how accurate is the 212 ELDx, after all, it was designed as a hunting bullet first, that inside ring must hav a negative effect on the stability at longer ranges no?

Yeah, I also eyeing those SMKs but they are expensive as f#ck!

Thx for the help all, I'll load a few rounds of 230s and shoot them out to 300m to see what the holes look like and see if they stabilize. If they don't, I'll go for 200-210 gr bullets and run them as hot as I can, once my barrel is shot i'll get a custom barrel with a 1:8 or 1:9 twist for the 230 gr Berger Hybrid Target.

I'm new at reloading, less than a year and I got excellent performance out of H1000 and 225gr ELD Ms, if I can get good results than a monkey can too. my velocities are higher than most with everything here in Vegas so my speeds are close to 3000fps with 75.5gr out a 29" barrel. I'm going to stick with 74.4-74.6gr, both gave me single digit SDs and 12 and 15 ES. At 1800yds they're very consistent but I try to shoot with low winds, under 10mph. Hornady brass wasn't that good for this rifle but some factory brass, MAI Ammo, is excellent so far.

Thank you for that info. H1000 seems to be the go to powder.

100 yard zero. 215 Berger. 10.2 mils at 1,330 yards. Shoots incredibly fast out of a 30” Broughton 5c 1:10. 3,030 fps.

And as far as the 230 OTM goes. I shoot 76.5 Retumbo at 3.618” coal ( AI MAG ). Shoots 2880 fps and I’ve taken 6 or 7 deer out past 875 yards. I think the furthest was 965 yards. It hits HARD and they were all drt. The 215 was very disappointing in terms of killing. Shot 2 deer that I lost due to no blood.

I have the same rifle and use 230 0TM Hybrids, for hunting and target work. It's excellent ?.
Use H1000, and forget any other powder, except for Vihtavouri N570 ( should you come across any).

I really like the 215 hybrids. I've been using H1000 at 76.5 grains and get speeds of 3000fps out of a 26 inch barrel

Hi all - copying a post I started in another thread regarding RPR 300WM Loads - 225gr ELD Match

Hi all - completed some initial load work-up and pressure testing of RPR in 300WM. IMPRESSED with this rifle. Under $1,400, and was grouping under 1/2 inch at 100 yards after the first few shots. It appears Ruger is performing barrel break in at the factory prior to shipping, as it was evident the rifle had been fired several times. Initial coating of copper, and cleaned easily.

Components:
Brass: Norma Factory (Neck tension 0.003 inch)
Powder: H1000
Primers: 210M
Projo: Hornady 225 gr ELD Match

I used a dummy round determine distance to lands, which measured Ogive (Og) of 2.801 inches;
Loaded three batches:
74.2 gr H1000: Og = 2.796 inches, 0.005 Jump - 3 rounds one hole, MV 2710, 2712, 2711 as measured with LabRadar
74.7 gr H1000. Og = 2.771 inches, 0.030 jump - 10 rounds, 1- inch group avg MV 2,721 fps Sd = 18
74.7 gr H1000, Og = 2.741 in, 0.060 jump - 5 rounds, 3/4 inch group avg MV 2,723 fps Sd = 13

The 0.005 jump looked the best in terms of tight group and Mv, so I built a pressure test with 0.005 jump running from 74.5 gr to 80.0 gr H1000.

74.5 gr H1000 - no data (radar not aligned properly)
75.0 - no data
75.5 - 2.765 fps (first three rounds same hole)
76.0 - 2,803 fps
76.5 - 2,800 fps (still printing in same hole - group less than 1/2 inch at 100 yds)
76.8 - 2,826 fps (bolt felt very slightly sticky from this point on - no signs of primer flattening)
77.0 - 2,833 fps
77.2 - 2,829 fps
77.4 - 2,825 fps (these last four shifted up 1/4 inch, but still substantially tearing into same hole as previous shots
77.6 - 2,855 fps
77.9 - 2,855 fps (impacts started to drift outside the centroid, 1/4 -1/2 inch)
78.2 - 2,869 fps
78.5 - 2,833 fps (moved to aim point since target was ragged hole, impact point exactly center, same as shots that started at 74.5 gr)
78.8 - 2,833 fps (low right, 1/2 inch - primers starting to show shallowing of primer impact cavity)
79.1 - 2,886 fps (low right 1 inch)
79.4 - 2,909 fps ( low right 1 inch)
79.7 - 2,909 fps (low right 1 inch or so, bolt significantly more sticky- so I quit at this point.

I ran some dimension checks on the brass when I got home, most would still chamber, albeit tight at higher loads. I resized the last shot (79.7 gr) with Hornady match die (0.333 bushing) to see if I could get the base back to spec. I then used Larry's collet die to work the belt region. The belt came back to spec and fit the chamber gauge properly, however the head had swelled about 0.003 inch dia so cartridge would not chamber in the rifle. I concluded this piece of brass was over pressured and trashed it. All other brass came back properly to spec. Cases for the hotter loads had stretched about 0.003 inches.

Bottom line -great rifle, forgiving loading conditions, and tight groups out of the box.

Based on these tests, I head to the 1,000 yard line in a few weeks with two batches:
74.7 gr and 76.2 gr.

I'll pass along the results then.

PS - rifle weighs 20 pounds fully loaded, recoil is comfortable (about like a 8 pound 308), though it got a bit more snappy at the higher powder wts, but nothing that affected my trigger finger.

Regards, Tim

I’m sure you’ll find the primer pockets real loose now. You should have stopped at 77grs.

Was concerned about that, however interestingly that was not what I saw. I tossed one pc of brass from the 2,950 fps shot cause the head grew after sizing and would not chamber. The remaining brass seemed fine, primers tight. I may be proven wrong, but that's what I sensed when reloading the brass. I plan to keep it under 77 gr, with the exception of some hot load eval at 77.6 thanks for your comments.

1 in 10 easily stabilises 230's here in the south of the UK.

Try using Vihtavouri N570, if you fancy a change from H1000.

N570 x 75 grains under 230 OTM 's is superb. That's what I use.

I scored 3 lbs on N570 today and shoot 215 Bergers. What is a good starting point and sweet spot for the N570? I’m pretty excited to try this unicorn powder. Can’t believe I found some in stock.

Funny you should ask, I was just doing some testing with the Berger 230s earlier this week. My gun has a 26" 10-twist barrel, and all info that I post will pertain to it.

All loads were seated identically with the projectile .010 off the lands for a loaded base-to-ogive measurement of 2.860 and a nominal COAL of 3.550.

In any event, at an ambient temperature of 75* running RL26, 73.5 got me 2884 FPS with a light ejector swipe, 74.0 got me 2883 FPS with a moderate ejector swipe, and 74.5 got me 2924 FPS with a fairly strong ejector swipe and slightly sticky extraction. I stopped there.

With Retumbo, 76.5 got me 2836 FPS with a moderate ejector swipe, and 77.0 got me 2872 FPS with a strong-ish ejector swipe and slightly sticky extraction. I stopped there.

With Alliant MagPro, 79.0 got me 2990 FPS with a STRONG ejector swipe and moderately sticky extraction. I stopped there.

With H1000, 75.5 got me 2890 FPS with a moderate ejector swipe and very slightly sticky extraction. I stopped there.

I haven't gotten to start reloading for my .300 WM. But I have tried a few commercial loads.
So far, the best performance I have tried is 230gr Hybrids from Applied Ballistics (Berger now makes the ammo).
Other rounds I have tried are Southwest Ammo 220 gr (from that group buy years ago before they started keeping peoples' money), Barnes 220 Gr OTM, and Hornady 200gr PH. The 230gr Bergers shot awesome in my Lilja 1/10 barrel.

Has anyone tried IMR 8133 or IMR 7977?
H1000 seems to sell quickly. RE-33 and N570 isn't as temp stable as I'd like it to be. In my experience, IMR has yielded better results for me (in .223 vs Varget and TAC), but I'm not that seasoned in reloading (off and on throughout the years)

I'm running 75 grains of N570 in my 300WM / 230 Berger OTM / Federal 215M combination. Its f****** awesome ?.

I've found N570 to be stable here in the UK.

What kind of velocity you seeing from the N570? My setup is a 26” proof 1 in 9.4 twist, gonna be shooting 215 Berger bullets.

I've not used N570 with the 215's, but it's awesome with the Berger 230 OTM Hybrids.
My 300 Win Mag uses 75 grains N570 with the 230 's, so I'd use the same amount, or back off a grain for the lighter 215's which would theoretically need a little more powder. I use Norma Brass, Federal 215 M primers, and anneal and trim my brass each time.
Just work up carefully, and compare my figures to what Vihtavouri advise.
It's a similar burn rate to H1000.

Can u post a picture I'm looking at that same setup this spring maybe the Ruger Hawkeye lrt.

My current load is Norma brass, 76 grains of H1000, federal 215M primers and 215 hybrids. I load it .020 of the lands and get just shy of 3000 FPS. Just got through my first firing on the brass so going to tinker with seating depth now.

Hornady brass got almost identical results with 76.5 grains of H1000
