that's funny to think the average tax payer owned 0 slaves the dems owned all slaves in the us but want the taxpayer to foot that bill . they should make the dems out of there own pocket pay if that's the case .

There is no way (or reason) to implement an action like this. For example, how much would Barack Obama get? White Mom and Kenyan Dad = $0.00, but he's black so????? So, what about his kids? They grew up with way more white privilage than my poor white ass did, how much is their suffering worth? How about all the Irish that were enslaved or endentured? I don't see a lot of Americans of Chinese heritage clamoring for this.

I am willing to pay anyone born into slavery before 1861 their "reparations". Any heirs should have their families portion of the money reduced by the total of all welfare benefits paid to all the living descendants of former slave over the last 150 years we have been paying them to sit on their collective asses.
Or they can renounce their citizenship and accept a free one way ticket back to where ever they think they came from and a nice apology letter signed by Nancy Pelosi or Spike Lee.

Congress has a long history of paying out money to correct presumed past wrongs. A lawsuit brought on behalf of 16,000 Black farmers in 1997 who may have been discriminated by the USDA for farm loans, paid out in 1999. Then Obama signed a bill in 2010 that paid out 1.25 billion dollars to approximately 40, 000 Black farmers or their estates in 2013.
In 2017 another 1 billion dollars for those that missed the deadlines on the earlier settlements started its way. Last I heard USDA was trying to block it.
Slavery reparations will be another endless round of payments and claims as new players find they can get something out of it. Both politically and financially.

I'm sure this is some bullshit they are using to con people to vote for them, typical pandering, knowing it'll never pass. No way people here would be cool just giving every black man and only black men a jackpot. For one, we have NO SLAVES HERE. Enough time and changes have passed that they have the same equal rights now as everyone else, whether they wanna admit it or not. I could go on, but I'd be here all day. I've lost two GOOD jobs and got cut from advanced learning programs (which could have put me in college a lot earlier, thus completely changing how my life would have turned out) --just because I wasn't black.
If they DO follow through with this, well, then it's gonna be payday for me too. And I'll just take it however I can.
Fact is, most slave owners back then were what we'd today call the 1%. Sounds like yet ANOTHER bailout. No matter how you look at this, it's BAD. It's wrong. And what message does that send to everyone? There are zero living slaves nor children of slaves alive today. It's past history.
What about the natives? We owe them a fuckton more and they are still being treated like shit and living in ghettoes in some of the most inhospitable land in the US. Government was literally running around making promises they knew they weren't gonna keep in order to get compliance in the short term. They never intended to pay them, slaves or Indians.
There are a lot disenfranchised people here. There are also a lot of people that could really use help, right now, to help significantly change their lives. Regardless of color or history.
Now I bitched above, and I'm sure that's what they want us to do, meanwhile they'll get EVERY black vote there is for this promise, real or not, and any discussion against it will be used to automatically paint you as prejudiced, for racism.
Even if they get both houses and presidency, it still has to stand up to the Supreme Court. And if it does, I'll just figure out a way to get mine too. Done with this multi tier justice system where I'm expected to be on the bottom, always, because I'm a white male. Sick of racism and elitism and, well, caste systems in all forms.

Lincoln was a a man of his times though and his writings in a modern view would be racist.
He speaks at being "sickened" at the sight of a black man and feared "miscegenation".
I think his anti slavery was less pure than a Quakers motivation part politics, part war tactic, part heart felt belief All men are Created Equal.

In order to convince people that the war was needed and have families killing families it could not have been hung on the real reason for the war, which was economics. Some over riding social value had to be used to justify the action.
