Other than the dude in spandex on page #28, anyone using Fiskars axes?

I've been helping my dad split wood to heat the house since I got my first ax at 7-years-old and have used all kinds of splitting mauls, wedges, grenades (round wedges), and axes to include Chopper 1 and Chopper 2. I think the Fiskars puts them to all to bed. I have an X27 for splitting the rounds and an X25 for breaking it all down.

I also inherited my dad's old Stihl 028 Wood Boss awhile back to aid in cutting felled trees up.

Going to drop into the 20s again tomorrow night. I am sick but I need to get some wood on the porch.

Cut some trees out of a windmill frame yesterday. Didn't get a picture at the start, but thought about it when I needed to fill the saw with gas. I had never done something like this, more work to it than I thought there would be.

OSHA would have been proud!
Around here, I’d bet a paycheck that it was a Mulberry. They find a way to grow in odd places like that. Can’t tell by your pic what it is.

Looking forward to the video of when you 'blow the stump'.... :D
Ummm,I did that once and put it through a one day old roof of my barn
I'll dig into the archives and take a picture of the picture and post it.

This one in the days when you paid the county sheriff $5 for a 60 day permit and bought your boom at the local hardware.

Most of my firewood ends up on my access road, which is convenient if you're in the mood for cutting firewood, inconvenient if your in a hurry to do something else.

I have a lifetime supply of firewood. Mostly beetle kill Lodgepole Pine. I also have Aspen, Douglas Fir, Subalpine Fir, and Spruce. Unfortunately no hardwood in my area.

I picked up this little stove for a small remote cabin. Wanted something small enough that wouldn't overheat the cabin, reasonable price, but still quality construction.

For some of you guys that know saws. What would an older Stihl 038 be worth.? Very clean and runs good. Just a ballpark number.

Depending on how clean, there are some "collectors" that pay top dollar for vintage saws. I would go to eBay and see what they are going for, that will get you close. However, flee market or pawn shop price on them have been in the $200 range if I recall?

Also, is it a AV (AntiVibration) or a AVS (AntiVibration/Super) model? That sometimes makes a difference, and will ad value.

Might as well post here. I'm having a difficult time finding a couple bars. Everytime I have my dealer order, or I order off of eBay, etc. I keep getting the wrong part.

Anyone here willing to look around for me, or call their local dealer?

Here's what I'm looking for;

Stihl 20" Rollomatic ES Bar with Wide Tip (13-tooth sprocket) Stihl P/N 3003 000 9622

Stihl 25" Rollomatic ES Bar with Wide Tip (13-tooth sprocket) Stihl P/N 3003 000 9630

These are Yellow Label, 3/8 - 0.50" bars, and need to have the exact part number on the cardboard sleeve and/or on the bar itself.

People who sell Stihl nowadays, don't know the product, nor do they know the difference between the different bars Stihl makes. They just look at a computer screen, which cross-references part numbers to other compatible bars and sell you that.

I had a gum tree fall on my property and for giggles, I offered it free to anyone who would cut it and get it off my property. This young kid (maybe not more than 22 years old) came by and say he wanted it. He asked if it was okay if he cut it up and split it before he hauled it away.

A few hours later and next thing I know is he's leaving with a few pieces of the stree split, but 99% of the tree was just cut into 18" pieces. I guess he didn't know the grain of a gum tree.

I don’t know anything about a gum tree. What is different about them?

I'll have to check, I just don't remember. I bought it new, maybe 3o years ago.

Thanks for the reply!

Sounds a lot like Elm
Elm makes great wagon wheel hubs
Elm got a bad reputation by the old guys and understandably so. Stringy, and terrible to split with a maul. Enter hydraulics, and it makes decent firewood. Variety of Elm and where it grew (yard vs timber) makes a big difference too. I’ve pulled dead standing Red Elm out of the timber that is straight as a string and 60’ tall. Wonderful firewood and splits like a dream. It HAD to grow straight up to find the sun. A yard Elm sucks to process.

What is red gum used for?
The timber has a reputation for durability, strength and its distinctive red colouring. Its wide availability has seen it used for a range of applications including heavy construction, railway sleepers, flooring, framing, fencing, plywood and veneer manufacture, wood turning, firewood and charcoal production.

"Hello, is this the Sheriff's Office?" 'Yes. What can I do for you?"

"I'm calling to report 'bout my neighbour Virgil Smith... he's hidin' marijuana inside his firewood! Don't quite know how he gets it inside them logs, but he's hidin' it there".

"Thank you very much for the call, sir".

The next day, twelve Sheriff's Deputies descend on Virgil's house. They search the shed where the firewood is kept.

Using axes, they bust open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana. They sneer at Virgil and leave.

Shortly, the phone rings at Virgil's house.

"Hey, Virgil! This here's Floyd... did the Sheriff come?" "Yeah!"

"Did they chop your firewood?" "Yep!"

"Happy Birthday, buddy!"

Just picked up my new saw. MS261. Been wanting another lighter weight professional saw for some time now. Hopefully it lasts as long as my other Stihl's.

It's the non-computerized model, and rumor has it that Stihl will be dropping these because of California. I'm still not sure how California can control 49 other State's? You can thank them for those stupid gas cans that take three hands to operate.

Especially since they don't want you to cut any wood or run any gas powered equipment.

I was about that age when I tried splitting black gum. The maul just bounced off it leaving a little black line where the edge hit.

If I had to give up all my saws but one, I’d keep my 261. I’m surprised Stihl is dropping the “computer” model. We’ll wait and see.

I’ve made small piles along the fence line to be picked up if it ever dries out. Cutting/scrounging has been slow the last 12-18 months as we’ve been so wet I can’t get to my usual spots. Along with that, I’m getting older and the drive to go huck wood out in the muck doesn’t have the appeal it did 20 years ago. I’m thankful I’m years ahead to weather the bad times. Kind of like a healthy savings account.

Couldn’t stand sitting around today on “isolation” and got into some work with my little Husky. Started in the 3rd pull and made quick work of this little project.

With rain over the weekend, the frost is out, but still soft. Doable though. Dropped 3 dead standing Red Elm phone poles (one of them was just over 60’ feet) and 1 White/American elm this afternoon. Took my union break by a little creek. Covid 19 free environment.
