So heres a fun question. Why dose the m14 garner so much hate? Yet guns like the FAL and the Ar 10 are so loved? Love to hear some thoughts and some real reasons. Thanks

Isn’t it pretty popular in our current conflicts?

No. There are some old ones in armories for a DMR position. Nobody I've ever talked to was actually allowed to use one. They just sit in the armory.

Could swear I saw one on a documentary. Also thought they said it was because 5.56 wasn’t getting it done at encountered ranges.

Lol oh really? I carried one almost every damn day....

I only have a guess. It's old technology. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you willing to really learn how to make the gun perform to it's fullest capability. And, a lot of people who buy them don't want to spend the time it takes to do this. So, they stick them in the closet, thinking they wasted their money and go buy something like an AR10 with a decent scope which, is much easier to shoot off the bat.

I have two AR10 clones, and one M14/M1A hybrid, and one out-of-the-box M1A National Match. M1A/M14 rifles are as different from AR10s as apples and oranges. They are iron sight rifles with a long sight radius, and that's how they were designed to be used. I own an HK91, and did own a FAL, and that M1A NM will outshoot them both with irons on all three rifles at any distance. Barrel manufacturing has vastly improved the last twenty years, and don't think for a minute that M14/M1A manufacturers have been asleep. Show me someone who complains about late production M1A NM accuracy, and I'll show you someone who hasn't spent enough time behind the gun. But, if you put it in a vice, will it shoot as tight as my AR10 guns? Not quite. If you put LMT A2 sights on one of my AR10 guns, will it shoot as good as that M1A off of a pack or bags? I can't make it happen. If I had to run through the jungle with a battle rifle, which one would I use? Oh, the AR10 hands down. It's about three pounds lighter, much shorter, and reloads quicker.

M14/M1A rifles are older technology and just different, but a helluvalot of fun. But, they do take some time to really learn what ammo to use and how to really shoot it.

Yes there was a massive push in 2009-2013 to get EBR's them into more hands in Afghanistan. Every DMR was issued one in my brigade.

I was in one of the first line units to receive them IIRM.

As to the OP...cleaning a m14(m1a) is a huge pain in ass compared to an AR/ kac varient... When your dragging that thing around every day the cleaning the m14 is huge pita

Or the new fad of using what instead of which as interrogative pronoun when the question is a narrow one

You were one of the few. I never said it didn't happen, but it damn sure wasn't common.

I feel like it was very common to see in Afghanistan from 2010 to 2013 during the big push...dunno when you were there or what units you were in but I know guys from all over the army that carried them during those years

It is due to the army and navy still having them. Some say that its due to cost, that the military dose not want to get rid of them because they had to press the 7.62x51 back into service. They had been shying away from the round. Others say its because they want to reserve scars for sf.

The Navy doesn't have M14s in general issue, other than deactivated drill rifles at the Naval Academy.

The SEALs may have some (and I doubt that too) but in any case SEALs are not representative of the Navy in general.

Marines still have them, and even though they hate it, they are still part of the Navy. Hence why i said navy
