Group Buys Aftermarket AI "Obsession" Chassis - Group Buy

Love the look of that short barrel and suppressor. What is the weight with a short barrel in that configuration? I assume you have no weights attached.

I have the 2 pound weight installed. Didn’t put it on the scale to check. But it balanced right where I have the tripod attached. Almost the exact same spot as my 26” barrel with the break installed.

Anybody that got their chassis last week do the install and take any pics?

Anyone shoot a match this weekend?

I shoot a 2 day this weekend and it was soooo much better. Just handling it and getting it moved around and manipulated was noticeably improved. I'm not that great of a shooter but I felt it was a lot more stable in positions and I was able to handle the recoil better (shooting 308 this weekend) to see my impacts. I've got guys that will be getting on your list if you do another run.

Idk when I’ll be able to shoot another centerfire match. Doing a rimfire this weekend and bring the AI to do a little practice with after the match

No, there wasn't any time for that. We had tee times that were aggressive to keep everyone safe with Covid. 🙄 But it was pretty awesome to be done in like 2 hours.

I didn’t get finished until after dark so I only have an indoor picture.

I installed the grip mod as well, I must say the fit and finish with that is flawless.

I’ll get some better pictures in the daylight, might wait until I get it down range. This might be one of the most molested AI’s. Poor girl...

Started its life as a 2014 AIAT, bolt was sent to LRI to Bush for small firing pin. Then AX stocks became available so she got round 1 of the torch treatment. I shot and enjoyed the setup for awhile but always hated the height over Bore. I’ve been following Sams progress with this chassis since he first posted his drawing for a competition AI. So naturally as soon as the production model was available I was in, thanks again Sam for your commitment to the project I couldn’t be happier with the quality and factory fit and finish. So she got torch treatment two this evening and Install was really straight forward. I also installed the GTAC AI grip modification and I can’t recommend that enough, what a fantastic product, I’m excited to try a couple different grips and settle it in just right.

I finally feel like this rifle is perfect, the ultimate AI in my opinion. Sam great work!

I dry fitted mine. Still waiting on the AR grip conversion from Gtec to complete it. But here are some pics.

What do ya think are the differences between the AO chassis and the MPA? Overall, does the MPA provide the same form/function while being half the cost, comparatively? Not doggin the AO, I want the chassis and butt stock myself, but pushing 2 grand makes me curious about the viability of the MPA...

Trying to be as unbiased as possible...if you like the MPA grip w/integrated thumb rest, the MPA chassis is by far the better choice. Even the AO chassis with the bolt-on AR grip tang won't work well with the MPA grip. However, if you like the Ergo grip or other similar AR grips, then that might be an option (although at an additional $400 cost).

From the few people I've talked to, they all needed some sort of Dremel/machine/hackjob fitting to get the AI action into the MPA chassis. Why this is, I'm not sure and I won't openly talk badly about MPA. Clearly this chassis is 0.001% of their business, and 99% of my business, so it's cool they even attempted to do it. The AO chassis has been my main focus for over a year, so it will drop in and require no modification to your AI or the chassis to work.

As for cost, the AO chassis plus the AX buttstock is definitely expensive. But don't forget, it functions perfect with the AT buttstock, and the AX buttstock can be skipped or saved up for later. I honestly think the AT buttstock with the thumbhole skins looks amazing. Also, the AO chassis comes with the internal weights and NV bridge so there's a little bit of cost savings there.

Lastly, the AO chassis is bonded to the action to retain the design intent of the AI system, while the MPA chassis is not. Will the action in an MPA shoot as good as the AO or as factory? Possibly, even likely, but I can't comment on that with data on the MPA. I also don't know if the unbonded action will take a hit on the barrel and retain zero like it would if it was bonded. Again, purely speculation on my part but I wanted it to remain bonded so that's how I designed it.

Sam, Gentlemen,
My apologies, after posting this query I realized it was a little rude to ask about the MPA in this thread.
It’s difficult to get understanding when all you have to go on are pictures, but the information about any product can be lacking, good or bad. MPA/AI combined looks good, but the incompleteness is troubling. AO chassis’s check all of the boxes and the AX stock is a great addition. Have to ponder the price point and decide if both chassis and stock are viable for me. Sam, I’m on your list for another run of chassis, if that tells ya anything... HA!
Sorry for being rude, that was not my intention,

Scott

Scott,

No worries, it's all good! I didn't take offense to it, and I don't expect every post to be swooning over my products and acting like competition doesn't exist.

If you're looking to de-bond and get into an alternative chassis for your AI sooner rather than later, the MPA is a viable option - especially considering I don't have any more AO chassis in stock right now. There might even be people selling their MPA-AT chassis if they decided to use mine instead.

Competition is good, and if/when I come out with a dedicated R700 chassis it will be going up against tons of other really great products. I won't expect people to act like there aren't other options out there when that happens either.

Cheers,

Sam

Sam,
The AO is my preference for several reasons, one being the extra length (forend), rail space, and I don’t like vertical grips... I’m weird. The AX stock seems to create as many issues as it solves, so I’ll probably keep the AT stock/target butt plate and keep stuff on the down low...

Just did mine tonight. Wasnt nearly as difficult as I thought. But definitely get everything prepped and clean before mixing the epoxy. I had actually made a mistake in disassembling the AX stock and has to rebond both sides of that little female coupler tube between the original chassis and stock. So between that and having to clean out epoxy I mistakenly applied to the QD barrel lug relief in the AO chassis, I wasted a good 10 minutes. I still had plenty of time to clean up edges and get things torqued properly.

Those toothpick shaped swabs were great for taking a small bit of epoxy and forcing it into the seam between action and chassis and then smooth to clean up any small voids on the seams.

The mag catch was a pain until I realised the small pin included is to hold the spring in the catch while you push the actual pin on through. Like geissele does with their AR triggers. The way I compressed the spring was with a mag, just stick the assembled catch and spring in on the short pin, stick the mag in compressing the catch spring while holding it so it isntpushed all the way into the action.. then line up the pin hole using light and tap the actual pin through. Mine took a bunch of light hits to get past binding and get through the spring. Once there you may need to twist and wiggle the catch to get the opposite side hole lined up.

Any plans for a AXMC version?

Thanks!
No plans for an AXMC chassis. I think the market would really small, since most users don’t shoot MC’s in PRS style comps, which is what the chassis is geared towards.

Sucks!!! Do you have a suppressor...they can’t see what they can’t hear haha
Ya I have Suppressors’s and said that when I got there 🤬 pissed I didn’t bring one along.

My buddy that was with me had a AXSR and Cadex .50 so I thought no reason... Mistakes were made.

Makes sense - I think right now people do not shoot AIs in PRS for reasons of being top-heavy, etc, and Obsession is precisely geared towards fixing that - and I think you are making the same point. In addition, the MC/PSR/SR were disadvantaged there due to the mag insert being sometimes finicky - but with the new mags, this is pretty much fixed.

That's a pity - I was hoping to basically make a PRS-capable universal travel system - take one gun, train up in 6.5CM or 308, switch to 6CM for comps, and 300NM for 1200+. Especially with the new comp trigger being compatible with the AXMC (not the SR, I think). vs right now the long-action and short action stuff means a Foundation/LPF PRS gun and a AXMC (or SR) for ultra long range - and this means flying with 2 guns, 2 optics, etc..

On a related note -now that the SR does not glue in anymore, any thoughts on that one?

For you guys who are installing the GTAC engineering grip conversion and are using a comp trigger you may run into an issue that's not difficult to fix. The rail that the trigger shoe slides on is a little longer than the AI factory trigger rail. The comp trigger would not release the firing pin without rounding the corners of the rail as you can see in the photo. Put the trigger in a plastic bag with the rail poking through and carefully round the corners with a grinder. I forgot to measure the rail before I started grinding but it doesn't take very much. You could also lengthen the slot for the trigger in the GTAC trigger guard but I don't have any Sage Green touch up paint. Have fun!

Just enough to take the edge off a 308. You should see the muzzle brake i have for it....

i love that little chode. i've used them in the past and they work great! in fact, my son has one on his little 308 at the moment. the brake looks like the doctor had a stroke mid-circumcision and the brake ended up with a dick that's somewhere between an ant-eater and a german army helmet hahaha

Had a nrl22 match today. Had to bring the AI out for its first time with the AO chassis to shoot after the Match. Everyone loved it. Including myself. With the area419 brake and the new chassis it has basically zero recoil with my 6.5cm barrel.

Looks great! Probably a little overpowered for a 22 match though haha

Got out to the range today and got the rifle zerod and did a little playing. I dont have access to my reloading equipment at the moment so the ammo used was an inexpensive 140gr BTHP American Gunner. Barrel is also new, it's from DMR LLC. This is something like my 4th AI barrel from them and no surprise it is a hammer too. I'm extremely happy so far with the entire rifle and results. I have no doubts that a good tuned load could break into the .2s

I would like to take this time to announce the first match win with the AO chassis.

@samb300 skull dragged the entire field of shooters at his club match finale yesterday, only dropping 4 points all day. Also taking 3rd in the seasons overall points. Well done, sir. 👏👏👏

Thanks bud. Yeah I had a good day against a stacked field. Our club match in WI is a PRS regional series and regularly draws 100-120 shooters for monthly 1-day matches. I’ve never shot 96% before, but I hope to do it again real soon haha.

Oh, and this is the second match win for the AO chassis. A customer won a club match at K&M at his first outing. 😎

Squad 1 killed it.
