    For hunting and bullet selection and barrel life you can't beat 308. 708 and 260 give you a little less off the shelf selection for better trajectories. All of these work great in a short barrel losing very little velocity compared to a magnum catridge short barrel combo

    Can a .223 do that?

    Could be wrong but I believe the u.s. military moved to the 22 caliber bullets in the 50s because the 220 swift could out pent rate steel compared to the 338 and 30-06.......that's when they created the 223 and 2222 mag to compete for the contract.
