Most likely 6-48 if your rifle is a few years old. The 8-40 thing is relatively new for the 700P's. You could buy a Leupold Mark 4 base as it comes with both sized screws and the base will work with either size.
The kits Tim sells are 5 plastic washers in different thicknesses. They aren't made for precise .01 Mil or MOA elevation increments. They're graduated for full (5 MIL) revolutions (very coarsely). There's a link to a video in the eBay listing I posted for you, it should explain the concept...
Thanks, I know about the hollow cavity in the buttstock. I'm worried about them pulling out with the thin outer layer. Are you talking about the guy on this forum that installs cheekrests?
