Hunting & Fishing Anybody have poor results with the 143 ELDX?

At that range, and with <1,000 ft lbs of energy, I imagine an 147 ELD-M might retain more ability to expand. That is certainly the view of Nathan Foster (the NZ terminal ballistics expert) who rates the 'ELD-M' series as superior for low velocity expansion.

Hunting & Fishing 6.5 Creedmoor vs 6.5 PRC is it worth the difference

I agree with craigWY & spearknives. With ballistic turrets that neutralise any ‘flatshooting’ advantage of higher velocities, and ELD/VLD bullets which often perform BETTER at lower velocities - why the need for more speed in a 6.5 hunting cartridge?

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

Ever since I stopped using the old 6.5x54 back in the 1980s, I've been waiting for a modern, flat-shooting 6.5mm that was supported with accurate, premium, factory hunting ammunition. As soon as the Creedmoor came along it replaced a 308 as my standard 'big game' rifle for all non-dangerous...

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

Upstate, I have field experience with both calibres amounting to several hundred Red Deer/Fallow Deer/Roe Deer/Boar & medium-sized Antelope (up to Kudu/Sable) - so 50lb up to 300lb+. The guy on Terminal Ballistics has done a huge amount of his work on small feral Goats, which are often...

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

I hesitate to stick my head above the parapet in this debate, but the two main calibres I've used for hunting deer and antelope of all sizes, over the last 42 years, have been 6.5mm and .308, and I think there is one angle that hasn't really been mentioned - which is penetration. Most African...

.260ai vs 6.5 creed in a new howa build

If you'd be happy with mid-2800s and the 140gr bullets, the Creedmoor would be fine. But 2900 might be a stretch with conventional powders, even using a 28" barrel. The one exception is that some people are seeing exceptional speeds using the much slower-burning RL-26 in 6.5 Creedmoor. It...

    Ruger Precision Rifle Discussion

I don't have an RPR, but have had great results with the 123gr Scenars, getting ~3050fps & very low SDs with RE17, from a 23" barrel. If you plug those numbers into a ballistic App, you may be surprised by how little wind drift it has, compared to the more 'normal' 140s.

Who is using IMR 4166 for 6.5CM

Frank, I know you haven't mentioned it, but when I was looking for speed with 120 class bullets, I turned to RL17 (Reloader Swiss 60), and it worked well. I got 3060fps with a 123gr Scenar, out of 23" barrel, using exactly 45gr of RL17. With a COAL of 2.83 (almost touching with my standard...

Hunting & Fishing 6.5 Creedmoor for hunting

I've used Scenars with my Creedmoor for both Mule Deer & Elk, from a 23" barrel Cooper, using RL17 powder. 123gr at 3060fps for Mule Deer 139gr at 2839 for Elk. Both one-shot kills.
