    Scope lapping?

    I don't think the aluminum rod will work too well for you since you are lapping aluminum rings with an aluminum rod. A steel rod would be better IMHO since the lapping compound will eats away at the rings and true them in the process instead of the rings AND the rod at the same time. How about...
