War would help politically (in theory) to unite the country behind their leader in "war". Distract from political issues at home.
Our old doctrine of fighting two major conflicts in two different areas of the globe has been unattainable for years now. We cannot fight both China and Russia in kinetic wars simultaneously without serious long term consequences.
It's not a matter of who "wins"... it's what happens in the years after the conflict and the rebuilding process that will determine how the world is shaped.
Although it would be very difficult for China to land amphibiously on the island of Taiwan, it's not impossible. T defenses may be modern and quality, but the land they are defending is very very small and once those anti ship/aircraft defenses are penetrated the Chinese mainland is only 80 miles over water at the closest point.
We can brag about projecting power all we want with carrier groups, but China would be fighting from LAND based operations. They can simply overwhelm with sheer quantity of missiles launched. Carrier groups need to be moving and avoid being found. Fighting China defending Taiwan they are at serious risk given the proximity to Chinese shores. Are we really ready and willing to launch sorties over Chinese territory/land? That would make it open season on the Chinese to attack American cities as well from a global perspective.
I firmly believe we MUST defend Taiwan. Not for democracy, but because like Israel being the largest US ally base in the Middle East, Taiwan is our largest ally directly between China and our shores. They are effectively a large military base less than 100 miles off the Chinese coast. To give up that kind of strategic advantage would be foolish.
We basically painted ourselves into a corner with Pelosi landing. If we did not go, then China claims victory in forcing us from visiting and would claim Taiwan as theirs with greater credibility. So the choice was taken out of our hands the moment it was announced.
BUT, they have all the cards in terms of if, when, why, and to what degree they respond to the aggrievance they would claim to suffer.
Their options are long in terms of which items to pick and choose off the menu of: full invasion, attacks from distance, naval blockade, limited insertion...
US and Japan are not going to keep it up indefinitely. Within 6 months we would be burning so much fuel and would need to rotate carrier groups. Japan's ability to defend Taiwan is limited. It's like a siege of Taiwan but China is right next door with all the resources it needs with easy access and the ability to move/ship anything it needs easily.
Hard to defend something when the enemy lives next door.
Any invasion/landing would likely occur in October
