I have lots of gas guns. I am going to be taking a long range precision class and need to pick up a nice bolt gun. I’m new to this page but have been lurking for a week or so. I traded a HK Sp5 for Nightforce ACTAR 7-35 dark earth. No I need a gun to put it on. I can get a new AT 6.5 24” folding stock for 4500 including tax and shipping or a new AT-X for 4650. The guy I’m taking the course from so I can’t go wrong with either but I think he’s used to people showing up with Rugers and whatnot. I know after I get some experience, I’ll know exactly what I want and will probably get something different but to start out which should I go with?

Up to 1000 yards. I’m used to red dots at 100 so anything over 300-400 is long range for me.

At that range, either rifle would be fine, I'd just see which stock configuration you like best, that may be the deciding factor for you, what stock fits your shooting style best.

That being said, 1000 yards with a 6.5cm is easily done with rifles that are a lot cheaper if you are on a budget.

I am in the UK and have an AI AT, with .308, 6.5 Creedmoor (6.5CM) factory and custom barrels and I am very happy with it, shoot the rifle with either of the 6.5CM barrels out to 1000 yards. At my range someone had an AT-X and they were not particularly impressed with it, poor accuracy with the standard 6.5CM barrel (they gave up and changed it to 260 Rem if I can remember correctly) and loose magazines (they were having the chassis modified to reduce the loose fit of the magazine!).

Isn't there a number of articles on here about issues with the AT-X, such as I have mentioned above?

As mentioned above, depends on how much you wish to spend. I bought a new gen 1 Ruger Precision Rifle (6.5 Creedmoor) for my son to shoot and he usually (but not always) out shoots me and I am using the AI. The only upgrades to the RPR are a Ruger muzzle brake and a Titanium bolt shroud.

I had a G1 RPR with a G2 forend I added. Should never have sold that gun. Reliable and decently accurate. I just hated the buttstock.

You don’t need either to shoot to 1000. AR10 will work.

AT chassis ergo doesn't suit everyone, which means buying one sight unseen isn't a great idea.

I have an ATX and it’s fantastic. I’m sure the AT is also great but I’d go for the ATX. The difference in price is negligible.
