Accuracy International 223 conversion working

So is it just as easy as buying the bolt and mag from Greg and tossing in a barrel or is there more to it? I have always loved this idea but seems like it could be a real PIA with mag length and all.

Ever used an AXMC?
Swap bolt, swap barrel, load mag and shoot

Shot a pile of old 223 ammo loaded for a different rifle. Breaking in the barrel, fed 100%

I put 500 rounds though mine last week on a ground squirrel blasting trip. Ran perfect all 5 days, zero feeding or ejection issues. No complaints-- it just works.

Wish I could have stayed one more day to finish fireforming the last 130 pieces of brass (mine is in 223AI.)

Ya'll fools got your barrels already...?!

There were quite a few kits out and running before Greg picked up the project from Enrique and Gilbert.

I bought my kit around January of 2021. I got the last 223 bolt from Enrique, and the barrel from Greg showed up a couple months later.

It's worth the wait.

What mags are running best? I like the mdt 223 mags because of their insane oal allowed, but Idk if they'll work in the atx

Ahhh, gotcha... I think I purchased mine the morning of the first day Greg went live, got my complete bolt & mag sitting here, but no tube yet... Which is fine, just wondering (not enough to bug him though).

I run the Accurate mags in mine, that's what Gilbert and Enrique recommended. As usual for the Accurate 223 mags, take a rat tail file to the front lip of the plastic insert to get a longer OAL out of them.

I have a few of the MDT plastic mags that I tried in my other 223 bolt rifle, and I don't really care for them. The MDT plastic mags require a lot more effort to strip the rounds out when closing the bolt compared to the Accurate mags. Not sure if it's a result of lip geometry, plastic composition, or both causing the issue. Bolt closing effort is much smoother and lighter with the Accurate mags.

I have not tried the newer MDT steel 223 mags, can't comment on those.

The old genuine AI 223 plastic mags are still be best IMO in terms of feeding effort and also allowing a really long OAL, but they eventually split at the seam... especially the ones near the end of the production run which didn't seem to be made or joined together properly. I had one of the AI 223 mags purchased right before they discontinued them split in half after a month of use. On the other hand I have some very old production genuine AI 223 mags that are still working great.

FYI, you'll probably have to file a little bit off the mag catch tab on the magazine bodies for these 223 conversions to drop the height of the magazine in the action, otherwise the feed lips interfere with the bolt body. Enrique did the mod with the Accurate mags I sent him. Don't file too much off the tab though, as the feedlips need to slightly rub the bolt body for proper feeding and function.

im in the same boat, very excited to get it in my hands.

Depending on what you ordered I got my tube last week (In stock barrel blank so no extra wait time). Ordered the same time as you.

Went back out today, dropped the load down to 2850ish with an 88 grain eld. It's too easy. Beat the steel out to 800. Barrel is a Mullerworks 7 twist 28". I find MW barrels tend to be on the fast side

How about AXSR then? :ROFLMAO:

I have an old AX short action bolt in the safe, staring at me... This 223 business is absolutely something that needs to happen at some point.

Now that the AI conversion is done, it is time to start my new projects.

I am glad and thankful that Greg picked up the project.
Absolutely, love mine and can’t begin to recommend SPR and the conversion enough

1) Lol, a true working 22 lr conversion for my 700 so I can actually use the same center fire rifle and 22 rf.
2) A couple of Farquharson actions, 1 is finished already in 375. 2 actions to go. 1 in 30-40 Krag and one still undecided.
3) A set of barrels in 45-90 for a double rifle.
All for me.

I have been following this thread for some time now. However scanning through I seem to have missed the contact info for getting one of these conversions. Could someone please post it here again?

Hello to everyone,
I have an AI AW .308, can anybody tell me if I can remove and swap the bolt head at home? Are there any particular things to take care during those operations? Can you provide me any pictures?

Thanks
