Hunting & Fishing 2021 hunting kill thread

1640096315675.jpeg

My 8 year old ask me if he could do a head shot this year, so went to the range and practiced head shot size targets. I signed off on him doing it, he got one with a 6.5 grendel at about 65 yards off a tripod.

Wow, congrats! Specs and more pics on that rifle if you ever get a chance, thanks.
It's a Bighorn Origin, 26" proof 1:8 from Straight Jacket, XLR magnesium, carbon folder, TBAC ultra 7, trigger tech, and a razor HD about 11.5# ready to kill. I need to get a lighter scope, I wanted a lightweight desert hunting rifle in a caliber that would push high bc bullets fast. 6.5SS with 122s has been very effective for putting animals on the ground. I have 150gr smks and 156gr bergers that would do 3100fps or more but I really only shoot out to 550 on animals I'm going to eat the extra speed and performance of the lighter bullets seems like a good trade.

I almost never post pics of myself on the innerwebs, but what the hell, it's Christmas! Took me pretty much 30 years to draw this tag and I put everything I had into it. I had exhausted all my hunting buddies by the time I killed him and ended up shooting him solo. It was easily the hardest, shittiest, GREATEST, hunt I have ever been on. The pack out was awful and I am told I was pretty delirious by the time I rolled in the door at 2 am. I would do it again next year if I could. I spent a bunch of time in the alpine on this hunt, and gained so much respect for these animals, especially the older, mature billies. They live by themselves for the most part and very few other creatures inhabit the spots they do. I saw a mountain lion, some wolverine tracks, and the occasional eagle. Other than other goats, they just live in a different world. They are an incredibly tough animal.

Every year I do a “long range” doe hunt with my dad in NW OK on a wheat field for a doe. This year was my personal best. 30 deg, Tikka CTR in a McRees chassis, Nightforce ATACR, Hornady 168 Tap. Virtually no wind.

527 yards, one shot fell in its tracks!

2021 Hill Country score

Honorable mention….Trick shot…..168 yards, facing me, 6.5CM through the belly cutting his tail off on the exit.

Looks like a good season. I was in a friendly tree squirrel shoot this year and would of made for a pretty cool story to win the pot by shooting the squirrels tail off. I’m hoping my 187 yard slow mo video with a 22lr might take the win

saw your daughters buck on the Rokslide 77TMK thread. Congrats!
Can you link me to this thread.

I'm building my youngest son a rifle. It will be a bolt action .223 for starters with 16 inch barrel and 6 inch form1 can. I'm debating leaving thay on through 2022 fall whitetail deer season here in KY or swapping bolt and barrel for 6.5cm.

Shots would be about 50-80 yards.

Thanks and anyone who has harvested deer feel free to PM me!

I'm 6'3", 240, and I shoot deer with a 16" tikka 223 (or a suppressed 10.5 with an aimpoint). No need for anything else.

Thank you!!! What an epic thread!

I had had subpar results in 2019 when my bolt action was all torn down....fitting new chassis, new scope base to allow optic to clear chassis, no time to reload and no time to zero (had just moved into new house the week prior).

I did as much reading as possible on the 77gr SMK (not TMK) and grabbed my WOA 18in SPR barreled AR that stays zeroed ALL the time into the stand.......did not work well.

Reading that thread taught me that there's a difference between "old 77 SMK = open tip" vs "new 77 SMK = closed/pointed tip". Evidently the old 77 smk work better for hunting ......I was using IMI Razorcore 77 gr.....prolly newer style.

For my son's first bolt action I'm gonna set it up in .223 ..... if I have a chance to snag a cheap 6.5cm take off barrels I'll do that and swap bolt/bolt head. If I don't snag a 6.5CM......I've got all the stuff to load some 77 gr TMK's and won't hesitate letting him use it in our shooting hut we use for the kids (has a TON of deer traffic and no more than 75 yard shot).

All years prior to using the 77gr smk I have used various bullets out of my 26 inch 6.5CM amd 9 inch form1 titanium canwith stellar results.

I just recently finished building my AR10 with 16 inch 6.5CM with Law Gen3 folder and shorter 6 inch form1 titanium can for coyotes and deer hunting.

***for anyone interested in 5.56/.223 results using the Sierra 77 gr TMK's ....go check out that RokSlide thread above!!***

Just returned a few days ago from my first Alaskan hunt…Epic; Exceptional and Exhausting.

Used a small basic Outfitter (excellent, more later)

18 days total, 13 of them hunting due to moving camp 5x and of course weather.

Nice! Looks like about a 8.5 year old Billy? What time of year did you kill him? I am life sizing mine and got him in Mid November in MT(Post 258 in this thread). Has a hell of a coat, anxious to see him all done.

Who did your Taxi work? Whoever it was did a great job. Goats sometimes aren,'t real photogenic when they are mounted and yours looks great! Wolverine is awesome as well.
