Ive been debating on which tripod head to put on a tripod. The options have come down to:
  • Tripod Head Option 1: 55MM Dual Tension Ballhead W/ Area 419 ARCALOCK CLAMP
  • Tripod Head Option 2: Anvil-30 ARC Ballhead (no Adapter)

  • Tripod = Two Vets Recon v2

I go back and forth between the 2, and thought the greater Hide community could share some of their experiences and knowledge.

I've ran several Ball heads, TA3 RRS and now a anvil and the anvil wins hands down for me. Easier to operate and lighter.

The anvil-30 is great for shooting off but it's lacking as a dedicated glassing platform...... if your primary use is glassing then ball head all the way..... mainly shooting the anvil-30 hands down.

One option is to put an Arca plate on the bottom of a ball head then clip in in the Anvil-30 for glassing and remove it when shooting.

Yes, that is exactly what I do ... best of both worlds.

My experience exactly. So, I mount a MUB plate with small ball heads for spotting scope and LR on the Anvil.

Was in the same dilemma as you last month on both tripod and head. I ended up buying the 2V Recon and their 55mm ballhead. My primary use is glassing through binos, shooting secondary. My shooting buddy has an Anvil-30 and I don't love the tension on it for glass. So like others have said, I think Anvil-30 if shooting is your primary purpose, but a ballhead if glassing. So far I'm very happy with both items from Two Vets.

ballhead hands down for glassing

if im shooting (matches or training) off a tripod 95% of the time i take the ballhead off and throw a bag on top anyways

if i were hunting in a scenario where the gun was clamped in all day i'd take the anvil 30 (though i have done this bear hunting with rifle sitting on a bag on tripod)

Thanks guys! I got the recon v2 in the mail the other day, and am impressed with the quality. Anvil-30 is still in the mail. The intent was primarily for shooting.

You'll be fine..... if you find yourself wanting to glass you can easily but a ball head on top!

A lot of my customers add one of our PC-LR-40 with a TH-40-Dvtl for quick release off and on.

Primary customers that go this route are hunters and comp shooters that want to add an independent panning assembly to the Anvil. I’ll be using it this year hunting probably. Will probably live on my binos if it fits in the chest harness. Yet to test it with the intended harness.

What is the difference between the PC-LR-40 https://rrssoar.com/pc-lr-40/ and the PC-LR https://rrssoar.com/pc-lr/ for using on optics? The PC-40 appears to already have an ARCA rail machined into it.

The PC-LR-40 is the same clamp in principle, just differs in size.

It is slightly shorter when you take the dovetail on the PC-LR out of the equation, it’s also smaller in diameter about .8”, which dropped the weight slightly.

Unless I am missing something you would still have to add a dovetail to use the PC-LR-40 where the PC-LR already has it built in. I don't see the advantage of a PC-LR-40 plus the TH-40-Dvtl vs just using the PC-LR.

CS from Daniel of Two Vets cannot be surpassed. I ran his Recon 2 a bunch this year in PRS/NRL/NRL Hunter/NRL22/NRL22X and the NRL22 National Championship matches. Flawless!!!! With that said, i'm selling it since age is catching up to me and i'm backing off the center fire matches. Need something lighter. Still hunting mule deer and elk so had him send me his "The Ruck". Installing the RRS Anvil head the package comes in at 3 lb 6.3 oz. Less than 1/2 the weight of the Recon 2 using the 55mm ball head.
How did you install an Anvil on your Ruck???

Hey guys, just a quick update.

Got the Anvil 30 in today. Works really great. I have an XLR Element with the integrated ARCA. Really like how the attachment is also compatible with Pic rails.

One thing I have noticed and could find an answer for, or maybe I'm not seeing it. When attaching to the ARCA rail on my XLR element chassis, I noticed that I'm able to slide the rifle (even when fully tightened). Sorry for the new guy question, is there a way to tighten this clamp? I'm not referring to the larger lever used to cant and move the rifle, but the lever on top of that one used to clamp onto the rail system.

The new clamp on the Anvil-30 ARC are able to be adjusted. Unlock the clamp, squeeze the jaw and tighten the nut on the opposite side. CW tightens it.

If you purchased a Gen 1 Anvil they are not able to be adjusted outside of the RRS Dovetail spec.

This youtube video at 1:30 shows a visual for you.

Thank you! A couple CW turns and that baby is on there secured. Very pleased with this setup.
