What company offers the option of re-rifling and re-working an existing barrel?

It may depend on what caliber the existing bore is and what you want in the end . For example I just read about a smith that does only 30 cal to 35 cal . Many folks were praising his work and turnaround time .

Redrilling and rifling or relining with a sleeve etc?
What’s it going on?
Any actual details? Is it an old martini conversion or a cheap ass bubba gump attempt to save a nickel?

Since this is in the bolt forum and not vintage I’ll assume the later and say don’t bother.

It is a Savage Model 10 that I want to target crown the barrel and change the twist rate is all.

Gonna take a lot of complicated TIG welding to fill in the old grooves first...
What are you talking about? Everybody knows you twist clockwise to increase twist and counterclockwise to decrease it.
come on man!

You can’t change the twist with the existing caliber etc…it would have to be rebored and rifled to a larger caliber blah blah blah and rechambered to a different caliber.

You do also understand that if you go this route that if things like any issues with the steel, or if the barrel has a bow to it etc…there are no guarantees it will turn out. If the barrel has a bow to it any work you do follows the existing hole.

Possible to reline it? Sure But does the cost vs what you get worth it? You have to weigh that question yourself.

Have I done it? Yep! Actually to a couple of Savage varmint barrels…one was a 223 Rem. And the other a 243Win. Both shot out and pitted. Redid them both to 6.5CM. Both turned out great and shot awesome. Did it mostly to say I did it but it’s not worth the time and effort! When I recrowned them you also lose a little length. 1” to be on the safe side. I cut them both from the original factory 26” length down to 23” finish.

Also as a barrel maker if anything goes sour with a customers old barrel….who eats it? Damage to threads, chamber doesn’t turn out, it doesn’t shoot etc….? Who’s on the hook? You guessed it if you said the barrel maker.

Also if there is any issues with the steel and it wipes out our tooling….who covers that? Customer won’t want to pay for a bill to cover $3500 worth of tooling!

Just too many if’s! So we won’t do it.

Frank Green didn't sugar coat it myphilly, he knows what he is talking about and it is a F--K Ton of work to do what you are contemplating. Why not just order a barrel from Frank and avoid all the aggravation and cost? You might be happier in the end. Just a thought.

Below are a couple of pic's. The first one with the all stainless barrel....I had the shop turn the barrel nut (smooth version) integral as part of the barrel. So when it's installed it's hard to tell it's not a separate piece.

The picture on the right is one of the barrels I drilled and reamed up to 6.5mm and then rerifled it for the testing. I think it was the 223 Rem. barrel in that picture. You can also see the steady rest marks when I had the barrel in the lathe and cut and recrowned the muzzle etc....

I found the stock on fleabay. It's an original left hand Savage silhouette stock (Savage never came out with a 110S in left hand and only made right hand rifles in the 110S). I picked up a used left hand rifle for like $200 bucks and stripped it for the action and trigger only.

Trued the receiver face, bolt face and lapped the lugs. Got a oversize recoil lug for it as well. After the new stainless barrel was made for it...I then bedded the stock as well. 6.5CM with a 23" finish length barrel. 1-7.5 twist.

Later, Frank

Haha…Frank, are these now the world’s most expensive Savages with all that labor cost? We’re you kinda bored at the time? ;-)

Nah! Wasn't bored at the time...was kind of tired of waiting for my 6.5 barrel to work it's way thru the shop (yes even us here at the shop wait as well). So I came in a couple of nights and wanted to see what I could do with the old blanks and see how they turned out.

Dam things shot awesome!
