Advice Needed for Outdoor Security Camera(s)

Be careful with the IP cams because it's pretty common for people to hack into those cams. In fact I remember over at 4Chan or Reddit where there was a thread dedicated to listing people's IP cam links.

Your statement is out of context. Your referring to these Ring, Amazon, Home Depot, Lowes, Costco, etc. IP based cameras that either plug directly into your home network/router or connected to your home wifi... Not IP cams as a whole. This solidifies my statements above, that your residential grade crap cameras/systems are not the same animal as the commercial systems I mentioned above.

There is no link between the cameras/IP camera LAN and the internet on a properly installed CCTV IP POE system. its closed circuit. 2 complete different subnets, no gateway/ internet link on the IP camera subnet.. Separate LAN port on the NVR for connecting to your network. Cameras record to NVR's internal hard drives.. We are not a believer in cloud ANYTHING. Some clients demand it, and we will do some cloud storage, replication, hosting stuff for them but only after protections outlined in writing for us and they have signed off on acknowledging it.

Using non standard ports, vpns, enterprise grade routers with threat prevention, instrusion detection, etc., bypass rules, dedicated vlans for specific devices (cameras, access controllers, video intercom) and strict rules limiting those vlans access are all things to prevent these types of hacks, intrusions of privacy, etc.... we don't open our NVR/cameras to the web...typical setup for clients that want to monitor cameras remotely is Wireguard VPN on mobile device, laptop, tablet, etc and camera viewing app configured with local LAN static... no open ports to the www, no cloud service or 3rd party middleman your video feeds are passing through to be hacked...

I would NEVERRRR buy any of these residential grade units, come home and plug them into my router or connect to my wifi... RING doorbell and cameras..... HAHAHAHHAHA. good luck with that, ill pray for you

Now if you like the man or creepers watching your every move and looking at your pee pee you should have RING cameras all over your house...Wasnt it just a few months back a Ring customer was awarded a few million because Ring employees sitting in an office in (AZ I think the office was) were watching this women and posting the nude or compromising content to reddit or something like that?? Just saying..

I feel like the the young guy that shows up to the range with my Barska topped Savage "tactical" rifle after reading this thread. I thought I was pretty cool with my gear... I guess not.

Not the cheapest, but easy to set-up and scalable.

No shit. All I hear now is crickets from the peanut gallery. I know precisely dick about CCTV setups other than.......

That's about all I know.

Holy smokes! I figured there would be a handful of personal testimony.....as usual the heavy hitters show up😊...I truly appreciate the insight, from all levels and perspectives! Ultimately, they are encouraging the oldest daughter to move into his place. Her house is just over 1/2 mile north of his place. Farm fields separate them. Most likely spring is when she'll move. Until then, the entire property stays in the family. He owned a massive chunk of land until they came thru with a state route about 50 yrs. ago and screwed him with "eminent domain" mumbo jumbo....my wife asked if I would be willing to give them all ideas as how best to proceed. Presently, they are collectively making decisions together about any expenditures or mods to the property. This won't happen overnight, but they are serious about monitoring the property. Internet connections and cloud storage will be up to them to decide. (Recall members, that I am a service rifle slut who uses MOA, therefore technology and me have a complicated relationshit..) I know the oldest would probably look toward something top shelf in the interim and while living there. She can be a nervous Nelly at times....but in the meantime, I plan to set up something simple like this for now....

Uhm, I see now that you are beyond help! Before any upgrades can be done to the property we have to start with your kit first! 😜

I've been a UBNT reseller for a long time.. mostly their WAP's but have used a ton of their switches, routers, PtP NanoBeams, etc..

Since they've migrated everything to Essentially a cloud managed environment via Ubiquiti cloud, I've moved away from everything but their WAP and even them....I'm migrating currently to 100% Aruba

Too many issues, don't like to have to manage and access everything linked to their cloud. It used to be you had an onsite Key which you could lock down to local admin access via the Lan...now all their stuff is cloud linked.. I've had major issues with recent firmwares on dream machines and switches...

UBNT own description calls themselves enterprise class hardware but it's not. It lacks lots of features you find in enterprise class hardware....they don't even offer OpenVPN in their routers..

Now, I would call Ubiquiti the high end of residential hardware and suites the needs of your small businesses out there...beyond that, no thanks... and for the crazy amount they are charging for their cameras, you can get WAY better cameras, features, alerting from commercial grade cameras like Hik or Turing foe the same money...

I use these, they work zero issues.

I need to get cameras/a whole system for a security system. 5 to 8 cameras, needs to cover two buildings. needs good enough resolution/picture to be able to identify anyone who steals stuff.

cost? don't really have a budget limit, because I don't know what to look at/my choices

5-8 cameras.... identify people in day and night.... 2 locations on 1 NVR....with new cat6 wiring..$5000-$7500... for a legit commercial system.. 5yr warranty... people and vehicle AI...

I have Arlo pro. Need WiFi however if you want them to truly be effective.

Wireless, mount anywhere, about the size of a rangefinder and sends you real time notifications when motion detected and allows you to live view from anywhere. Of course with WiFi

Downside is they have to be charged if not plugged in. Batteries last about 3-4 months depending on usage and temp

Think it was about $300 for the hub and 3 cameras.

They attach to anything metal via a built in magnet. Very handy if you want to move them around

I’ve positioned mine to temporarily monitor furnace issues as well as keep an eye on my smoker etc when busy

Good quality video. If you want to read plates at any distance tho the ones I have would lack a bit compared to the new Arlo or higher end cameras
Our Arlo cameras you have to step right up to them before they begin to record. Very good quality recording, but the sensitivity of our system rather sucks.

I believe you can adjust the sensitivity on the Arlo cameras. I have the Arlo Pro and it will pick up a vehicle driving by on the street (I live on a dead-end street so we don’t have much traffic) 50 yards away.

Get your evil on…
Walk the property at night, the bad love the dark, but also view it approaching in broad daylight to find blind spots.
When considering cameras, especially wifi cameras, consider on board recording on memory cards during internet outages.
Remember, a lot of trespassing happens during power outages and evacuations, have battery back-ups with ample amperage to cover till power is restored.
Video analytics, ie. cameras that discern humans from insects, birds, or animals, plus vehicles, has come a long way and can reduce your chances of nuisance alerts.
Security system cameras featuring “rule based” and “location based” recording, so you are only recording when either the system is armed, your are not there, an alarm is triggered, a zone is violated (car pulls in the driveway), movement is detected, etc. etc.
Aerial shots are fine for knowing where someone went, but give zero description of features/clothing.
Fake cameras can draw attention from cams with a better point of view.
There are many tricks to the trade to protect your property.

I've tried every adjustment available and it won't pick up any movement more than about 6-8 feet from the cameras.

I have two Reolink systems and eight 4K cameras. They record 24/7 on 8tb hard drives. If you get something like that, it will pick up everything. Decent desktop and mobile app, decent night vision (as long as camera is not behind glass- screws up the IR)

I would definitely reach out to the company. That has not been my experience with the Arlo pro. Sounds like you got bad cameras. Good luck.

I totally get your concern about outdoor security cameras. It's essential to keep our homes safe, right? Well, let me share a little story from my own life that might help you out.

A while back, I decided to beef up the security around my house, especially because we were going on a family vacation. After some research, I settled on a good outdoor security camera setup. Here's what worked for me:

I realized that where you place your cameras matters a lot. Make sure they cover all the vulnerable spots around your home, like entry points and blind spots. I put one near the front door and another overlooking our backyard.

Instead of getting a bunch of cheap cameras, invest in a couple of high-quality ones. They provide better image quality and often have useful features like night vision.
Great first post on a thread that is 1 year old. Definitely not trying to sell your security system.

I sent you a PM. Please go upgrade to a commercial account as required by all companies posting on SH. Thank you

Efuy system is pretty darn good. It will track the person or thing, they have up to 3x get a home base with a hard drive and solar if you don't have power near where you want to put it. Also I know it will rotate and track up to -5 below in winter 3k resolution no subscriptions and good tech help. I have 4 of their cameras. One solar and three hooked to 120 volts.
