Lost my best friend to cancer this week at 12 years old. She was a rescue Duck Toller mix we had for six great years. She was a gun shot survivor (pre us getting her), had a limp but didn't let it slow her down, and 50 pounds of love and good cheer. She is deeply missed.

I posted about the loss of my best buddy Hades a few months ago. In my grief, I failed to mention that we also have a female GSD. We got her about a year before Hades passed.

Nyx isn't as big, beautiful, or as smart as Hades was, but she's also turned out to be one helluva good dog. She's much more affectionate than Hades was--he was always a good companion but he was more interested in patrolling the yard than snuggling on the couch.

Nyx likes to do both--she's more praise oriented than food oriented and she knows that she's part of the family. While she seemed to get over Hades' passing sooner than I did, it's obvious that she also misses him. Her favorite place to lay out in the yard is right where I buried Hades.

I took this pic yesterday because I thought it was a little odd that she had been sitting still for so long--she was just watching over my gf as she weeded one of her flower beds. Nice to know that even when I'm not around, my family is under a watchful eye, and there's nothing quite like a good dog :)

I double dog dare you not to tear up at this homeless guy giving his dogs a birthday party...

I was going home from work one day and stopped at the local QT for some gas...........got done, and was headed inside to pay for gas, and there was a "homeless" person with a dog near the door asking for anything............I went in, bought a couple of cans of dog food, paid for my gas, and headed for the door. When I got outside,I gave him the dog food, and said.........feed the dog........
I love dogs more than most people...........

One of the shelters I support gives food for "needy" people. One year I went with a pickup truck load of food. Big old 1990 ford pickup with two tanks and an 8' bed, full to the rails of dog food.

I have a reputation for being a bit of a nut there, so when I went in and told the girl I had a food donation for them and would need some help bringing it in, not sure what she thought.

Lots of tears all around.

I like the saying, I try to be the human my dogs think I am.....I fail naturally.

My two goofs.

Willow does not approve of Federal 243.

You're my kind of people. When I drop off donations to the local shelter I have to make sure I don't see any dogs though...

Guitars, a banjo, cannon and two dogs, there is a song in there somewhere. I wanted to learn the banjo, but busted both thumbs and now they just don't move correctly. I still pick at the guitar however.
The one on the right (Chief) my Catahoula was trying so hard to sit still for that picture. I used to take my banjo out on rotations and around 2 or 3 am I would start picking dueling banjos just to mess with the rotational unit when they were down here in Louisiana. Apparently people still tell stories about that.

Any Rhodesian Ridgeback breeder recommendations?

All I’m finding are show dog breeders that want me to basically lease the dog from them and have all sorts of stipulations - or puppy mills. I’m just looking for a healthy pup from a responsible breeder.

Cool breed, another high energy dog that requires a job, patience, a firm but gentle hand (establish and maintain boundaries/rules) and a lot of attention. I had actually seen a few listed at rescues a while ago, probably too much for the owners (like my Catahoula that was dumped out at my place, and is the best kiddo ever).
Are you looking for papered or not?

I don't know any breeders, just curious. Rhodesians are a breed I considered before.

Nothing really wrong with a "Puppy mill" if you do all your research and they have the papers on the parents that you can check out and check the history of and they are willing to give you all the full papers without being dicks about things

Your best bet is a smaller breeder that is doing it from their house / property and isn't into taking them to shows.

Still expect to pay probably up to $2k for the puppy.

The big snotty breeders are always trying to trash talk the "puppy mills" because they don't want cheap reasonable competition that doesn't try to screw the customer over.

Here's how I put it to one of those breeders:

So you want me to buy a sports car and pay you full price for it.
But you want to keep your name on the title
And you want to borrow it anytime you want to take your girlfriend out for date night
And you want to take it anytime to go to show it off at car shows
And you want to tell me where and when I can drive it and what I can do with it and who I can drive around in it
But I of course get to pay for all the gas, tyres, maintenance, insurance, parking and transporting?

How about you just keep it and pay all bills and have a good life.

There was a whole thread on them, do a search

Make sure you have 2 dogs if possible not just 1 as hounds are pack animals and don't do very well alone.
As long as you can get the dog out for a good hard run once or twice a day they will be happy to lay around the house the rest of the day.

You will need to be in good shape, taking them for a run means running faster than you think your legs can move.

Just note they are not specifically human aggressive unless threatened / invaded or something is off, but they do have a very high prey drive and are not likely to listen if you tell them to stop chasing some animal, so you'll need to be strong enough to hold onto them / pull them if you need to get your point across.

They do best in warm climates and shed very little. They are not a good fit for a cold climate.
They are very intelligent and if you give them unfettered access to the back yard, they will pretty much house train themselves with minimal work.

Hounds are very sociable and they do best if they live with you as part of the family in the house and hang out with you whenever you are home.

If you do choose to breed them, be aware they may have up to 10 puppies at once and you will need to have dog formula on hand and be prepared to be up every couple hours for the first few weeks bottle feeding any puppies that are not getting enough milk.

My Catahoula is 2 to 3 miles and a good bit of force fetch to get him to not be a total spaz.

Thanks Gents. I’ll check out the ridgeback thread. Preferably, I’d like one with papers. Plan is start with one now and get a second the following year. I grew up with them but this’ll be my first time with them as an adult owner.
